Any credit for the win, or was Holyfield just too far gone?

Considering Holy went the distance with Ibragimov I'd say Toney deserves some credit. It was a good win for his first fight at heavy.

Depends on how you feel about the steroids issue I suppose. I mean giving credit seems to be to be a bit disingenuos considering he was caught twice. But that aside, you have to consider the win a good one, yeah. Hollyfield himself claims injury (shoulders).

I think Toney derserves some credit for the win, but I'm not sure how much. Was Toney on steriods or not for this fight?

It was a good performance. Very impressive the way Toney took Holyfield apart. Painful to watch for a Holyfield fan.

Many people thought Holyfield would be a bit too much for Toney, so Toney deserves credit. The way he performed cannot be knocked. Toney never looked as good at heavyweight afterwards.

Toney was actually in decent shape. 217 pounds but not very fat at all. Obviously blown-up on steroids, but Holy's probably a juicer too.

The thing is, Holyfield was no longer any sort of special fighter. Coming off a year layoff and a loss to Chris Byrd, about 40 years old, the Ruiz fights 2-3 years earlier had basically illustrated how far Holyfield had slipped. If he was still in the rankings it was merely due to a severely weak division.

Even if he was off them, the benefits from them remain.

    So...

what about Holyfield was he on steroids. He could have been we never know.

I think he definetly was against John Ruiz. So the benefits of that match remains against Toney.

And yes Toney deserves lots of credit for stoping Holyfield.

I think I give Toney more credit than most because...

    1) He's one of only two people to ever stop Holyfield even though Holy's been around for well over 20 years, the other being a skilled HOF superheavy

And 2) Toney came up from friggin' middleweight as opposed to Cruiserweight.

yes it was very impressive performance by Toney. Also former middleweight trading punches with one of the hardest hitters in heavyweight Samuel Peter was unbelievable. Toney is true legend.

    Agree wholeheartedly w/ Sonny's Jab.

You just don't see elite fighters get taken apart in there. They lose fights other ways, but you rarely see a guy taken apart and ko'd in those late rounds.

That's one of my favorite results and this is one of my favorite bouts. And whenever a guy is taken apart, you get to watch all those subtle moves and all that precision work in there. And it wasn't as though this guy was a 24 year old guy or hot prospect Holyfield was fighting===it was an old guy that used to be a middleweight.

Al Bernstein did a real good job announcing the fight as well & he could sure see and explain what was happening to Holyfield in there. Don Turner as well.

Toney was kind of old too, 35 in this fight.

Of course, the steroids have tainted a lot of Toney's later victories. Assuming no 'roids, I give Toney a lot of credit for just shutting Evander down and taking him out.

Well Holyfields roided a hellofvallot more than Toney since his move to HW so you cant hold that 1 against James. Toney didnt know what the **** he was doing with Roids and was doing allot less needle than the other top guys

Guys who roided since 1990 with the probability of Roiding in brackets:

    Tyson (90% - employed a steroid guru)
    Holyfield (100% - employed a steroid guru)
    McCline (100%)
Vitali (100%-got caught then added 50lbs of muscle in 10years)
    Wlad (80%)
    Lewis (80%)
    Golota (100%)
    Ike Ibeauchi (100%)
    Sam Peter (100%)
    Briggs (100%)

Practically all the top guys do it now, its not even an issue
