I've always remembered this one fondly. It was one of those nights I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, and I remember everyone present, even non-boxing fans, having their eyes glued to the television. Which is always better than when they are instead bored to tears not getting the appeal. This content is protected
God this fight was a treat. One of the more unsung of the great feats in boxing. Toney was an alien compared to the fighters of today and he was a real thorough bred fighter. He looked like a show pony in the ring but had all the subtle, efficient defence of a Willie Pep. If I could fight like any fighter it would be James Toney.
Classic clash of styles. You need a lifetime of skill to deal with a man with an engine like Jirovs. Luckily, Toney had that. The finish is just out of this world.
I never have had anyone else "Get" boxing. That was till I had a family friend over and I was watching Toney vs Barkley and he blurted "Wtf is that" or something to that effect watching James enter the matrix unbroken every second of the round. He didn't watch long but while he did he was absolutely shook.
I remember watching it live with a bunch of guys from the gym. Everyone knew about Jirov from beating Tarver at the 96' Olympics. I was picking Toney to get stopped for the first time in his career as I was not sold on him at Cruiserweight. I was absolutely wrong! Jirov was never the same after that fight. He certainly had no business moving to heavyweight.
One of my favourite fights of all time, and the one which breathed life back into Toney's career after almost a decade in the wilderness following the Jones loss. No idea what Lederman was watching with his 113-113 card. Jirov fought very tenaciously, had success of his own of course and the fight was competitive all the way through. But it was also a great demonstration of the difference between aggression and effective aggression enveloped neatly within twelve superb rounds.
True. Samuel Peter hit Toney with some haye makers and couldn’t stop Him in either fight. No knockout loses in 92 fights across multiple weight divisions in 29 years as a professional.

I think everyone pretty much agrees, Lederman's scorecard was a joke. It was a boxing masterclass from Toney, and even though Jirov kept it competitive with his unbelievable workrate. For me Toney always looked the better fighter. One of the best Cruiserweight fights of all time, and should of won Fight Of The Year over Gatti vs Ward 3.
Great fight, I remember yelling at the TV in round 12 when Honey had Jiov in trouble. I was a little disappointed he didn't stick around to fight Mormeck who had just come on the scene, but can't say I blame him either for going to heavyweight.
