If Toney hadnt been robbed against Griffin the second time then he was going to face Jones in 97 how would a focused and dedicated Toney fare?
Jones UD. Jones had a perfect game plan to beat Toney. Toney cannot deal with fighters that keep the fight on the outside/long range. Toney's style is about drawing you into his wheel house where he can pick counters. You get a fighter that has the patience to keep the fight on the outside, and Toney will struggle.
You mean if Montell Griffin hadn't shown up, and outpointed Toney fair and square, how would that fight have turned out? I think we would have seen a competetive fight, Toney was not drained at 175 like he was at 168. I think James would have taken 3 or 4 rounds off Roy, but lost via UD once again.
I agree toney should've gotten the nod against Griffen in the rematch, bad decision IMO. Against RJJ at 175 he loses again and just as bad IMO, Toney's always won by being more skilledm and outslicking his opponents, Noone outslicks a peak RJJ.
Toney won the second Griffin very cleary. One of the worst decisions ever. Voted by the Ring as the worst decision of the year. Toney - Jones II would have been more competitive with Jones probably winning by a margin around 116-113.Toney would have been very motivated for that fight.
What is this "focused and dedicated Toney" you speak of? Is it some sort of mythical creature like a unicorn or a leprechaun? Jones wins.
Not a chance. Toney would have always struggled with a guy like Jones. He's a stylistic nightmare for him.:deal
First, Toney won both Griffin fights. Second, if we suppose an in shape and motivated Toney had showed up in a rematch against Roy in 1997 (which isn't a 100% given), he'd have given a much better account of himself than he did in 1994, where he was severely weight-drained. I still think Roy would have beaten him by decision, but he would have had his piece of work cut out..
"Toney cannot deal with fighters that keep the fight on the outside/long range"."You get a fighter that has the patience to keep the fight on the outside, and Toney will struggle". I strongly disagree with this statement and think this is a myth. An inshape Toney can deal with any style.Of course, the Jones style would always be difficult for him. Toney dealt well with several very good fighters who kept the fight on distance: Griffin II, McCallum I and II, Nunn, Reggie Johnson, Tim Littles, Ruiz... Of course Toney is very good at close quarters but he can outbox very good boxers at long range. Griffin and Thadzi beat Toney at close quarters, because Toney was not in good shape. Though, IMO Toney edged both fighters.Of his six defeats, only Jones and Griffin II used a lot of movement and we all know Toney won Griffin II.
I think Jones beats Toney all day, Jones was unbeatable for 10 years ( I dont ever recall a fighter beign as dominant against quality opposition). The fact that it took him till 35 to lose says it all. I also think people forget when Toney fought Tadzi etc he was fighting 20 TImes in 2 years!! that is also unprecidented. I think Toney gives Jones alot of problems losing a decison 116-112. I think I prime Toney would have beat Calzaghe, his counterpunching was superb the straight right and terrific body punchign would have been too much for JOE. Joe would have wanted to fight too much which would have been his downfall.
