Watched it a few weeks back and never got round to starting a thread about it. This is an overlooked trilogy, 2 very skilled technicians waging a tactical war, not much not to like really. It had the classic story line the older champ (McCallum) taking on the young hot shot (Toney). Also the naturally talented kid (Toney) vs the cagey veteran grafter (McCallum) The first 2 fights were great fights with back and for action and tactical thinking the epitome of tactical warfare. Quite controversial also. Thoughts? Scorecards (ill post mine later when i find it)
James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I: 115-114 Toney McCallum: 1,5,6,8 and 11. Toney: 2,4,7,9,10 and 12. Round 3 even. James Toney vs. Mike McCallum II: 115-114 McCallum Toney: 1,2,6,7 and 8. McCallum: 4,5,9,10,11 and 12. Round 3 even.
I think I have another card somewhere for Toney-McCallum I and I have Toney taking it by three points. I think the first fight is a clear Toney win. The second one could have gone either way and it was a pale imitation of the first. Haven't scored the third fight.
The first fight is one of the best boxing matches you'll ever seen. Lovely crip jabs, feinting, countering, and fierce exchanges for good measure. Some beautiful defensive moves on show as well. Without question, an underrated match. Up there with most of the Fabulous Four's fights.
I just watched the whole trilogy yesterday. Toney-McCallum 1: 114-144 Toney-McCallum 2: 114-113 McCallum Toney-McCallum 3: 117-111 Toney
I believe I had Toney winning the first fight the first time I saw it, but in the times I've seen it since then I thought it was close and hard to score. I've always thought McCallum was flagrantly robbed in the rematch. I believe I had him winning about 8 rounds to 4. The third fight was a clear win for Toney, who came on strong down the stretch to take it as I recall.
1st fight was a pick'em, 2nd was clearly Macallum's. Though he won at a canter but the scoring was horrible.
**** i can't even remember which fight i watched, only one of them though. I had them winning a round each all the way to round 10, having it even, then Toney taking the last two and winning a close decision. I think it might have been the first fight actually. Anyway, even though i had Toney winning, i thought McCallum throughout the bout, showed the way to beat Toney, by using footwork and not playing into his hands, employing the jab from the outside. Suppose it's credit to Toney that he still won anyway though (in my opinion)
Think it was, that's how i normally watch series' of fights, with the first one first, think i planned to watch the lot but didn't get round to it.
To be honest, I thought both the 2nd and 3rd fights were fairly dull. The only one that was truly great was the first one IMO.
M2S i liked the 2nd one it was more tactical than the first with out the action. i thought the first was mesmerising but the 2nd was intriguing
