As Toney is looking for a suitable opponent for his homecoming party in Detroit under his own prmotional banner, what do you guys think of a bout against Brian Minto? This would make some sense as both are ranked within the top 15 by most recognized bodies. Also, with similar height and weight and opposite styles, I think that such a match up would be fun to watch and bring the winner one step closer to a major big money fight.

I would rather see him fight Lyachovick to be honest.

But if that wont happen, Minto would be ok replacement.

Minto is kinda slow, even at this point Toney 'should' be able to outbox him pretty easily. You can never be sure about Toney after his disappointing fights against Batchelder and Oquendo, but him being on his way down to 220lbs and finally taking training seriously makes me somewhat optimistic. There's still hope for Toney.
To get back to your question, yes, Minto is ranked with the WBO and the WBA, he's durable, a good stay busy fight for Toney, so why not? I would prefer James to take on Kali Meehan tho, that's also a very winnable fight for Toney and Meehan is ranked higher than Minto with most organizations.

I agree that the white wolf would be a suitable opponent but I doubt that lightsout promotions will be able to raise enough $$ to make it happen, especially considering that the greedy Gotzev is Lykiavtich s manager...

well, if lightsout promotion s have kept some ties to don king this still might be a possibility... without king being involved, my guess is that toney will never be able to reenter the top 5 wba ratings.

Stylistically this could be a hell of a fight.

    Liakhovich, I mean.

Lyachovich is a tricky, skilled boxer, pretty underrated, plus he's not ranked with any organization, I feel this would be a dangerous fight for Toney at this point. Of course I want Toney to fight the best opponents out there, but he has to take a tune-up first so we can see where he's at.

I know Lyakhovich looked **** in his last bout against Valuev (he was totally out of shape), plus he is terribly inactive, but I have a feeling he will be back and that we haven't seen the last of him.

Lyakhovich, despite not being ranked at the moment due to inactivity, is certainly a much more dangerous opponent than Minto...

Apparently, JT weighs around 225 so he is ready for a decent opponent. Minto, laykovitch are OK, Mehaan is less attractive. Toney should fight somebody who is ranked by the 3 major bodies.

Meehan is ranked higher than both Minto and Lyakhovich. Meehan is ranked in the top 10 with the WBA and the IBF, he's at #12 with the WBC.

From that point of view, it makes sense. James needs to beat a fighter with a high ranking. I expect Peter to drop in the IBF rankings, so Toney will probably be number 5 very soon.

Minto would be a good opponent for Toney from Toneys point of view. Even though James is probably through as a heavyweight contender, he'd always be able to beat a second rate clubfighter like Minto. But is it an interesting matchup? Would the result mean anything? No, and no.

Toney would be a huge step up for Minto. If Minto could beat Toney, it would bring him right into the middle of the HW division, does not matter how old and shot Toney is.
