Just rewatched that fight. Only 6 weeks after winning the title against Michael Nunn, Toney took on prime Reggie Johnson who was clearly on top of his game. Johnson fough a great fight, floored Toney in the 2nd round (only time I have seen Toney seriously hurt) and won the first few rounds. Toney came on from the 4th round, hurting Johnson on a few occasions. At the end, I thought Toney won by 3 points (as one of the judges did). Officially it was a spliut decision. Toney clearly was the winner in my opinion. Underrated fight and win for Toney in my opinion. It is not quite Mc Callum - Toney I but not far off.
A really good fight and interesting to see Toney without a wad of suet hanging over the top of his trunks. Here is the way I saw it: Round 1: 10-10 Even Round 2: 10-8 Johnson (Johnson scored a knockdown) Round 3: 10-9 Johnson Round 4: 10-10 Even Round 5: 10-9 Toney Round 6: 10-9 Toney Round 7: 10-9 Johnson Round 8: 10-9 Toney Round 9: 10-9 Johnson Round 10:10-9 Toney Round 11:10-9 Toney Round 12:10-9 Toney 115-114 Toney Damn close fight
I think the late 80's- early 90's era of middleweights was a killer... full of excellent fighters. And actually a very deep pool of talent... It never gets much credit...but one of the very best imo. Off the top of my head...will have to give toney-johnson a watch again, cheers man.. RJJ Toney Johnson Eubank Jackson Benn Watson Collins Parks Nunn Kalambay Barkley Castro Hopkins McClellan
