We recently did 2 underrated guys who lose to everyone in hypothetical fights w/ Patterson & Norton... Now 2 hypothetical beasts who can literally beat anyone at any given time although in reality they are the epitome of mediocrity!!!! Who wins HW Toney vs Prime Tua????
I've got a feeling a in-shape Heavyweight Toney confuses & frustrates Tua, & wins a Wide UD. Tua would be swinging & missing a lot of huge bombs, & Toney would land many beautiful counters.
Tua was better than Peter, but don't pretend he's not one dimensional too. Plus, Toney's ideal weight at Heavy is 217lbs, not 234lbs...
Interesting fight, yes Toneys got a granite chin, but Tua is one of those guys who can end it at anytime and with Toneys style, could be a recipe for disaster....im sitting by the sidelines for this one....
I really doubt Tua can end it at anytime against Toney, have you seen Toney fighting Sam Peter twice? Peter is a heavy, powerful slugger with buckets of raw power, but Toney took his bombs well. Toney is a ex-middleweight, with a Iron heavyweight chin. Besides, the limited Tua would find it extremely difficult to hit Toney clean, because of his exceptional defensive wizardry.
I'd go with Toney UD, Tua has a punchers chance but Toney is almost certain to outbox him as long as it lasts and Toney has the defense and chin to stay out of trouble
Peter was a lot bigger than Tua too, and it was the size as much as anything that gave Toney problems. Toney and Tuaman would be fighting at the same height and Tua wouldn't be able to bully him around. Toneys got to be the clear favorite here.
:good Good point, Peter was 4" taller & 15-24lbs heavier than Toney, & he used those size advantages for physical bullying.
i didn't say prime Toney because HW is clearly not his prime weight...I said HW assuming everyone would choose their idea of the best HW version of Toney to compare with a prime Tua!
I wouldn't say Tua was at his best against Byrd in '01, but at a solid 233lbs, & having undergone an intensive fitness boot camp, Tua was in significantly better shape than the flabby 245lbs he'd been for the Lewis fight a year earlier. Still i don't think that Tua was busy enough to beat Toney. I had Byrd beating him 7-5. Although, i know it's up for debate whether Byrd might be more elusive & a better boxer than the conditioned 217lbs '03 Toney.
I wasn't referring to the Tua who fought Byrd but the Tua leading up to the ike fight was in the best shape he could be.
