damn, i didnt realize that. i would have that RJJ was facing his biggest test but was still a decisive favorite. watching that fight on Versus makes me depressed that Roy is still fighting though. retire, man, and let us remember you like you were...
toney was tested, and had beaten, good names by the time the fight took place. while this was considered to be the first big test for rjj (hopkins was'nt big then). toney was #2 p4p as well, if i'm not mistaken.
Yeah Toney was right up there P4P... Roy had yet to make the climb into the elite (as in p4p), although many people obviously saw that he had the talent. Yes, Roy should retire. But not before Tito goes in fo'.
When we saw Toney in the dressing room, he had his hood on and had an intense look of concentration on his face, while Roy was ringside laughing and cheering on his friend fighting on the undercard. Right there, we all said Toney was going to take it.
Toney was P4P number 1 or 2 at the time haha, this is the same James Toney that ran away from fighting Benn and Eubank after promising to take them both out when they challenged him Live on TV before their 1993 rematch right?
I wish Toney would have fought both Benn and Eubank. Those would have been some classic fights. A Toney/Benn fight would have been a slugfest. It's a shame that never happened. Unless I'm mistaken, wasn't Pernell Whitaker the number 1 p4p at the time of the Toney/Jones fight? Toney was considered a top contender for p4p behind Whitaker, then Jones' dominance over Toney catapulted him into top p4p contention alongside Whitaker?
Toney indeed was theman to beat.. Roy was supposed to lose by a close decision... It all went bad that night for James..
Nobody knew the "real" worth of his win vs Hopkins (because nobody knew how good a boxer Hopkins would turn out to be) so people thought Roy was untested while Toney had already beaten Nunn, McCallum, Barkley, etc.
This says he wasn't... http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_Pound_For_Pound--1990s Toney was #2 or #3. Whitaker was the King.
Yep Toney was favored and one of the top P4P fighters and the time...and people still say Roy didn't fight anyone. :-(
If I remember correctly yest Toney was favoured to win but he had put in a shaky performance or two leading up to the fight....
