Sorry, but Matchroom have to do better than this to justify their presence as the sole boxing promoter at Sky. Barker is 1/25 to beat Rotolo - who has never beat anyone of note and is over the hill. This is about boosting Barker's rating with the IBF for another title shot, which is ok as long as we get a televised show with at least two other competitive fights. Groves is 1/100 to beat his opponent, who has no chance. Sure it is very short notice fight, but it is likely to be one of the three televised fights tonight due to his profile. Purdy (fair enough Carson Jones fight fell through) but he is 2/9 to beat the durable Mexican. Overall, tonights televised show is very disappointing. Sky keep plugging all these domestic duels i.e Frampton/Quigg, Barker/Macklin/Murray etc but the fights need to be made. Instead Hearn is directing a lot of these fringe world class fighters to softer IBF routes. That is ok from a promoter/manager perspective, but he should be compensating this with at least two strong co-support fights to justify his standing as the sole promoter otherwise we are back to square one with mismatches and uncompetitive fights. We cant have one very good show followed by a couple of uncompetitive shows, he needs to be constantly delivering top shows, he has all the resources to do so.
Gonna set off in a bit to get my tickets, Looking forward to it. Some good 50/50 fights on undercard. Camacho vs Clarke could be a really good fight if they get going. Ochieng's got a tidy little test, Serre is no mug at all. Thoughts on the Sky show are it's a average card. Just have to see the action then comment really. Sometimes the cards that i don't expect much from exceed expectation.
Yeah it's not a great card. Hopefully, it's more a one off than becoming the norm. It's similar to the substandard ones which saw other promoters lose their deals with Sky. I haven't got too much of a problem with there not being boxing on Sky every week so long as the shows that they do have are of good quality. This isn't but I'm glad to see Matchroom looking to expand their stable
I would rather see those under card fights i.e Camacho, O'Connor, but with regards to what will be shown it will be Nelson and co in the studio hyping the **** out of very uncompetitive fights. Not what Saturday night 'Big Show' boxing should be about or the quality standard for the blue eyed boxing promoter at Sky. As much as I like Hearn and some of the progress that he has made, he cant just expect a free pass when he is dishing up televised cards like this
I have came around to this view, I would rather better quality boxing, even if it means less shows. Matchroom with their expansion and the advantages they enjoy have no excuses not to put out top shows.
I think the main problem is, Barker has had about 5 rounds in 18 months, Groves signed on Monday & Carson Jones pulled out of the Lee Purdy fight
Also, should Groves and Barker (or Purdy) get quick stoppages, we could see Camacho's fight live as well, as that is on after Barker
That's really good. There was a small show 5 minutes walk from me a year or so back in a recreation center and the cheapest tickets were £35 for a show of, with no disrespect, nobodies.
Gasman, agree with you, except Id rather see boxing every week and take a chance on the quality.Ill watch tonight, but if Id bought a ticket would want a refund.Wont mention this again because Ive done it to death, but I never expected Purdy/Jones to come off either time{and said so}until,I think,Tuesday and wasn't amazed when we got the bad news the next day. This Mexican,if he is to be Purdys opponent, was a very good fighter once nd if he has two thirds left it could still be good,as at his peak I think he'd have won.Possibly a better fight would have been Byrne, and could see this happening later if Purdy beats Rivera or whoever is in the opposite corner. The fight involving Groves is a mismatch, don't know how it was allowed but appreciate they want an easy one if he's out in May.Apart from these, its probably a decent bill if you're within easy driving/train distance.
Forgot to mention it,but agree the Barker match is a poor top of the bill.Surely they could have got somebody better after Darrens good showing against Hope,a better opponent not too long ago.
