No version of Ayala beats Duran. Ayala quit against Yori Boy after Yori took his best and didnt go out like Ayala thought. I dont want to hear that its an old Ayala because its a question of heart and against Duran he would need heart. There's too much myth surrounding Ayala.
He had tons of talent, but the flaws that made him a ****** / woman beater / drug addict would've stopped him even if he didn't go to prison at such a young age. As the previous poster said, it's a question of heart. Somewhere along the line it'd be questioned, and Ayala wouldn't have answers. I think asking a "what if" in a case like Ayala's is the same as asking about fixing any other shortcoming of any other boxer. What if Carl Williams had a better chin? What if George Foreman, in his first career, had better stamina? That said, it is fun to speculate and indeed ask "what if" from time to time. Regarding the original question, I'm trying to recall the story. Didn't Ayala somehow get a chance to spar with Cuevas when he was a young teen (13? 15?) and do, at the very least, pretty well?
The story goes, Cuevas was looking for a sparring partner & a 15 year old Tony Ayala Jr. was bothering his father, Trainer Tony Ayala Sr. to let him go. Tony senior was hesitent, because of Cuevas' great power & reputation. As the sparring went on Ayala got the better of the exchanges & had Cuevas staggered a little bit. and the sparring session was immediatly halted. & Cuevas' manager Lupe Sanchez was scolding Pipino as they left the ring for his performance.
Like I said Ayala was an unproven fighter who has turned into mythical perportion's with the what he could have been scenerio. One of the most overated fighter's on this forum.
