Ayala was a young destroyer who was ripping through the pro ranks. He was an all action fighter with very good crisp combinations. From what I heard he was in line to fight Roberto Duran when he effectively ruined his career by his action outside of the ring he ended up serving over a decade in prison for ****.

What are you're thoughts on Ayala? Could he have been in the same league as other greats from the early 80's such as Duran, Arguello, Pryor and Leonard?

Tough to tell; he never really fought anybody. I think Maldonado had him down briefly too, didn't he? Promise is one thing, but boxing history (all of sports history, really) is chock full of people with all kinds of potential and never quite make it.

He was what he was; a disturbed individual who never had the mental and emotional makeup necessary to be what he might have been.

No, talented fighter, but a bit overrated. Davey Moore would've beaten him if they fought, as would Hearns, McCallum, and Benitez. Him and Mugabi and Hilton would've been a tossup fight, however.

Youre joking right? I recall him spitting on one opponent while down and trying to hit another while the referee was seperating them to end the fight.

I dont see why not. Tony wouldve been a major distrupting force that changed the face of the jr middleweight picture and punched with the kind of results that would have concerned major stars such as Hearns, Benitez, Leonard, and Duran. Probably would have picked up at least one major title

This guy was a real *******, in and out of the ring, it was a really long time ago, but I remember he did spit on somebody after a fight, then tried to keep beating on another fighter, after the ref stopped it, then in 1983 he raped and beat a woman..

By the time he got out of prison he was too old and slow to amount to anything, then he went back to prison again..
Good riddance hopefully they threw away the key this time..

Would've been Jr. MW champ at least, taking Duran, Moore and Benitez apart with ease. Hard to say with Hearns. Tommy could definitely put him out with that right hand, but had the chin and stamina issues, which Tony could just as easily exploit. McCallum...idk. Would be a classic for sure.

Exactly. This is the definition of a Piece of ****. At the age of (I think) 15 years he brutally beat the **** out of a women in the bathroom at a drive-in theater, broke her back I believe. He then either rapes and molests a neighbor who was a young school teacher (this was when he was with the Duva clan and was thought be the next big thing), when he was set to fight Duran, whom everyone was thought was finished at that time. He got sent away for this one. When got out, he did the comeback until Yori Boy Campas beat his ass, leaving Ayala crying in his corner on his stool. He then breaks into a house and a women shoots him in the shoulder. Away he goes again.

This punk makes Ike B. look like an all-american citizen.

Klompton I think that you normally know your stuff but I think BE is correct here. Anyway isn't it a widely believed fact that he beat up Pipino Cuevas in sparring as a 14 year old.

I heard he was six when he brutalized Pipino. It's a widely known fact. His father was a bad parent because he kept him out of school that day for the occasion.

Tony Ayala, Jr. was one of my favorite fighters, he was awesome.............it's a shame he went to prison, after that he was never the same, had to go back to prison, so all that talent wasted. A really exciting fighter gone to waste.........

A fight with Roberto Duran was being talked about shortly before Ayala went to prison. If Duran was fired up as he was against Davey Moore,Ayala would have been knocked out.
