I think if lax boxed and kept his cool he'd be a show, but i am a bit worried adulation might hamper his efforts.

OK, just finished watching "The Hitcher"(the Rutger Hauer original), so now I can answer with undivided attention.

No, not family. About the only Ayala-like connections I have is that I, like Tony, are from Texas originally. Additionally, I attended college for a year in San Antonio, Texas, which is, ironically, Tony's hometown. The Ayala family is to San Antonio kind of like the Ewings are to "Dallas". Not to mention Mexican and Chinese food are two of my favorites, Tony's as well. It was said that Tony pigging out on Chinese food just days before the Campas fight played a big part in why he lost.

Anyway, I remember you asked me this earlier, and I basically said I'm fascinated with obscure subjects, especially from many years past. Which still holds true. I tend to hone in on things that, in general, nobody else does. At the local Mexican restaurant I regularly frequent, I always discuss boxing, football and other sports with the proprietor. Being a Chicano, his favorites are who you would probably expect, which are Chavez and Delahoya. Of course, I always bring up the Ayala factor. We're always discussing fantasy matchups, like you and I and everybody else do here. He always comments how prime Chavez would've ripped apart DLH; I'll bring up how 14 year old Tony battered Cuevas and who Tony would've blasted had he not succumbed to his dark side. Lots of things. Lots of inquiry. Lots of fun. My other big thing other than Ayala is my obsessive hope that the Rams (my favorite NFL team) will someday return to L.A. where they belong. I NEVER acknowledge them as St. Louis. I can't believe their ***** of an owner got away with that.

Oh, besides being fascinated by obscure things, I'm also OCD. You, nor I, will never know what I'll get fixated on next. It could be anything.

The one consistent interest I have is anything having to do with L.A. during the 60's-70's. Most particularly, music, movies and airlines. Saw a good one this morning dealing with this particular subject, it was "Riot on Sunset Strip". It came out in 67, basically dealing with the hippie culture of Los Angeles. Totally my kind of subject matter. Such great bands emerged from this scene. The Byrds, Love, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors, the Mamas and the Papas, to name a few.

In a nutshell, Tony Ayala isn't my only vice. He's just the latest.

Great post mate, great post. I'm actually part way toward you. When i get interested in something, i get it BAD. Almost always along the lines of sport, either one i'm playing or one i love, such as boxing.

That's a great list of bands, i have albums by all of them. Actually maybe no Buffalo Springfield.

Can i be rude enough to ask about OCD? I get the drift i think, and could look it up, but i'd rather if you explained a little.

The Hitcher eh, the mate forced me to watch it decades ago and what a watch it was. I went out and watched very Rutger movie i then could, of course lol. Great movie.

How much info do you actually have on Tony, especially from his pre prison days? Do you know pretty much everything about him, or are you constantly searching for more? God knows how much material i would have hiding about lol

    cheers

Laxpdx, what other fighters did you like to follow?

Boxing is a sport I've loosely followed off and on over the years, but this past year my interest has been consistent as ever. Largely about the past history of it- and Ayala.

Of course, I've always loved Ali, but my interest in the sport began just after the Brawl in Montreal. My stepfather( at the time, long since former) was an avid fan of boxing and Sugar Ray Leonard. It rubbed off on me. Yes, I grew up idolizing SRL. Given his nice-guy image, charm and smile, to me he was the ultimate hero. Duran, given his mean looks and mean spirit, was the ultimate bully/ villain. Like many other 8- year old kids, I was prone to hero worship. One I loved, the other I respected yet hated. Now, I like both of them. As of late, I've become more fascinated with Duran and his career. I enjoy his interviews, especially when he says how he would've destroyed Mayweather.

I liked Hagler and Hearns a lot too. Marv was such a wrecking machine. I remember vividly how he so convincingly crushed Hamsho, Sibson, and Scypion. The first Hearns fight I watched was against Shields. I only have vague memories of that, only that Hearns kicked ass. And Hearns definitely impressed me vs. Leonard. I had a totally new level of respect for him after what he did to Duran. I definitely thought Hagler would've been the one to do that (I still think he should have). I though Hearns could beat him too, but not that convincingly.
I remember watching Mancini-Kim (not the end, thankfully), and parts of the Pryor-Arguello rematch.
Holmes-Cooney was another notable one watched in my childhood home.
I remember wishing Dokes would've beaten Coetzee. No particular reason why, just liked Dokes.
Yes, these and most other noteworthy 80's bouts were all watched in my house. I didn't see many of them, but kept up through my stepfather and HBO specials.

Growing up in heavily Hispanic South Texas, Julio Cesar Chavez was all the talk. His 90-0 record at the time made me think he was invincible, although I wasn't a die-hard fan of his. This was about the time DelaHoya was on the rise. He's another guy I've consisently followed and liked over the years. Needless to say, I loved it when he decimated Chavez.

Yes, I like SRL, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, DLH, etc. but this website has really given me a much better understanding of the sport, and an interest in fighters I never knew much, or anything, about. Rooster, you and JT and everybody else have all been instrumental in that regard.

And Rooster, due to you, I am gaining a growing interest in the 80's MW scene. It wasn't just Hagler. It was a wide assortment of intense sluggers who were all grit and no glitter, which makes the whole thing all the more interesting. Need I mention Ayala?

As for my obsession with Ayala, it is largely because hardly anybody seems to know, or care about, just what a prodigy he was. He's almost forgotten. I've always honed in on these kinds of things, things that interests nobody else.

Ah, speaking of true gladiators, Spartacus is on.......

Ah, Rooster, one last couple of questions. Living in L.A, were you ever a Rams fan? Do you remember Western Airlines? Those are another two of my favorite things of all time.....I just wish the Rams were still there.

Can i be rude enough to ask about OCD? I get the drift i think, and could look it up, but i'd rather if you explained a little.

OCD is obsessive-compulsive disorder. I actually have Aspergers' syndrome, which has OCD-like symptoms.

Basically it is a syndrome manifesting itself different ways, ranging from various fixations (on anything; in my case, Ayala), to knitpicky perfectionism to repetitive rituals, thoughts, and actions, and/or constant worry about "consequences" if they are not followed. Did you ever see "As Good As It Gets"? This is in regard to Jack Nicholson's character. He was OCD.

Some people have all these symptoms. Some have just a few. The degree of severity varies. With me, it's certain people, places and events. But I never know what it'll be. Quite amusing, frankly. It could be something as simple as the way you complete a certain task at a certain time. Of course it holds absolutely no significance in the scheme of things, but it'll rub me a certain way and stick with me forever.....It's lost on others as to why I think something is so funny or why it holds so much importance to me. All I can say is, if only they were me.....

Ah ok, i should have gathered from the initials. Sounds like you deal with it well and definitely have a great attitude anyways. Quite enjoyed As Good As It Gets. Saw it at the cinema with an ex if memory serves me right, a damn good show. The movie was good too :smoke

How many Tony fights do you have? (Relax, not after any)

I don't have any. If I did, I wouldn't mind making copies for you.

Welcome to the club. (Isn't it nice to know you have company here?) A check of my posts with probably give the game away. (I would like not to obsess about boxing, but it's probably a more benign and wholesome fixation than say, porn.) A naltrexone/fluoxetine cocktail is my current experiment for addressing the issue, and although formerly effective fluoxetine isn't working as yet, the naltrexone does seem to have alleviated my urge to engage in minor troublesome rituals, and possibly be relieving elements of the Asperger's malbehavior. (I'll know I've hit upon a suitable treatment regimen when I've successfully managed to wean myself away from this site. Meanwhile, I remain Velcroed to this forum.)

I was more a fan of San Francisco Niners because of the superstar squads they had in the 80's. Don't take this personally but I loved how they thwarted the cowboys in the NFC game. No one could match the Niners for comeback drama. I still remember the regular season between them in December 89 when it was the somewhere in the 3rd quarter and Rams were seemingly so well in command, I just turned off the set. What a shock to find out the next morning SF won the game.

Didn't get to the rose bowl to see the Cowboys in SB 27 but was amused watching the spectacle on the screen.

Yes, I remember Western Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Pan Am, etc. I didn't live in LA in the 70's but stayed in Palm Springs.

That January 82 Niner-Cowboy game doesn't hurt at all. I did root for the Cowboys in that game, but since then I've come to like the Niners somewhat, while I've hated the Cowboys for years. At the time of SB 27, I was a die-hard Bills fan, so you could say I had a new hatred for them after that. What else is really painful is remembering that NFC Championship Game in Jan 90. The Rams had a 3-0 lead, were driving for a sure TD, then Chris, oh sorry, Jim, Everett, gets sacked by the invisible pass rusher. It was all downhill from there. Niners 30 Rams 3.
