Good matchup! It is shme they never met because being around at the same time you would think the fight could have ben made at some point. Ganigan was a free swinger and very aggressive. I think Baltazar would bide his time and pick Ganigan apart. Baltazar by kayo in a great slugfest.
Not if Ganigan gets him first. Ganigan was a southpaw. Both guys knocked some real good guys and both guys got knocked out a few times. I think coin toss.
I thought Ganigan would have taken Baltazar. It wasn't only Andy's straight left that Tony would have had to worry about, but Mizoo's right hook downstairs was the punch that Arguello was raving about immediately after their classic war. (Alexis was so confused by Ganigan's "weird style" that he kept calling it a "left hook" to the body.) The final knockdown Andy registered to stop O'Grady was a straight left to Sean's torso. He was a deadly body puncher with either hand, as well as to the head. Baltazar had as good a left hook upstairs as anybody of his era. He certainly floored Howard Davis Jr. with it, and Howard was the fastest man in boxing at the time. But the hook to the head would not be the best punch to use against a southpaw with the Hawaiian Punch's peculiar style. Pryor floored and took out Arguello through attrition and demoralization. Ramirez surprised Alexis with a flash knockdown. But Ganigan actually pounded Arguello to the deck with his first round right hook to the body/left cross to the head combination. Later in the bout, he buckled El Flaco Explosivo's knees during another blistering exchange. Arguello's chin and durability are perhaps the most overlooked part of his qualities as a warrior, so Andy's ability to hurt and drop him should not be underestimated. Although Ganigan's chin has been questioned, it may also be revealing that Alexis finally took him out by pinning him against the ropes and doubling up on his precision right uppercut to the solar plexus. Andy's chin did not fail him on this occasion, probably the most exciting win of Arguello's career. Ganigan was a two time NABF LW champion who could also win over the 12 round distance. Baltazar was an entertaining performer, but not quite as accomplished as Ganigan at the world class level. Baltazar would not last the distance with him, but beyond that, I won't hazard a guess as to how long Tony would continue. Andy was sure electrifying in his nationally televised appearances though.
Ganigan had too much of a wide open style. Trading blows with Baltazar would be devistating for him. Baltazar had decent boxing skills to avoid the hammer blows of Ganigan & eventually catch him with a powerful left hook. Although Ganigan could turn the fight at any moment with his powerful punches. Baltazar would avoid the free throwing exchanges and wear down Ganigan for a later round assault, and score the TKO.
