I like both guys and I'm sure this would be a hugely entertaining fight but I can't think of anything on Tony's record that suggests he could beat a class act like Quarry. I'd pick Jerry here, in the manner of his win over Thad Spencer.
I’d enjoy a repeat of a post fight comment of Quarry’s from an earlier victory “well, he fell awkwardly.”
Jerry Quarry by TKO 5. Jerry swapped punches with fighters like Smoking Joe Frazier, and Jimmy Ellis. He took out Earnie Shavers on Dec 14 1973 in round 1, he also outpointed Ron Lyle in that same year.
Remember him in a interview on tele, the cardigan ! had a medium sized whole near the pocket, and the buttons were done up wrong, so the look was lopsided, bless.
I actually have huge admiration for Jack. He was seen as hugely unfashionable in his day, ( Cardi and all ! ), but he was immensely brave, tough and persistent. A real example of making the very best of what you've got. His record against top British Heavies is superb. London, Prescott, Walker and, unbelievably, Bugner. In retirement Jack worked extremely hard running his butchers and fish and chip shops. He invested a good chunk of his money in a piece of land outside Swadlincote where the big logistics park now stands. He actually died a millionaire. To quote that great Boxing fan Bob Monkhouse, " They're not laughing now ".
Totally agree,,was a real trier, and would go in with anyone. At one point there was talk of him fighting Patterson. Delighted to learn of his lucrative land investment. Good guys don’t finish last! As a matter of interest on the same note, Roy Harris also became a millionaire through investments.
