Tony Bellew wants to change cruiserweight limit to 190 and make a new ‘super cruiser’ class at 220.

Horrible idea the last thing we need is more weightclasses.

You mean SCW or a smaller HW (if they create SHW)?

So he can win a title, a belt or two. Do you think DW can beat Fury, AJ, etc. at this stage? It's possible but not likely.

Not sure what you mean... maybe that a small (by current standards) HW KOd a big HW. The real surprise there was the age diff.

Glad you brought up Pov. Look at his two losses - both to ~6'6" talented AND big HWs. He was near prime vs Wlad too.

If there was, say a SCW division and a bigger HW div. Pov might have ruled the SCW div. for many years. Plus no reason he couldn't take a shot at going for the bigger HW title.

Wlad clinched too much v Pov and AJ was losing until he landed the big one, Pov was throwing Tysonesque counter hooks and AJ had no answer.

Not to mention, the inevitable way this would play out is:

    • the 190-220 division would soon be abolished due to a confluence of factors (a. lack of interest among both casual and diehars fans in a newly established division with no heritage or tradition yet, and b. most fighters preferring to either bulk up for the prestige of the HW - or super heavyweight, depending on what it gets called in this scenario - championship...or, in the case of guys weighing 195 and below, simply cutting to cruiser to not get knocked around by guys with a 25lb advantage; plus even CW by this point would have a richer and more storied history and therefore more covered title belts than would the new class)
    • we are then left with an even wider gap between the smallest heavies (now 190) and the giants pushing seven feet and weighing 250 and up; instead of giving up fifty pounds or more they're now giving up sixty or more.

Where did I even hint Pov wasn't a hell of a fighter? P4P he's the equal, perhaps better than Wlad or AJ. But at HW sizes can and will vary by more than a few pounds.

At some time during his trilogy w/Ali Ken Norton said something like "Ali has a new style - holding". But like Wlad, Ali was allowed to do his jab, jab, jab, hold style. Of course Norton was robbed in their 3rd fight. If I recall correctly after that fight Norton said that Ali was bigger than boxing.

I'm serious, are you suggesting a more equal in age Pov beats AJ? He certainly would've had a better chance.

Nobody has to weigh a certain amount to fight for a title.

Roy Jones fought for the HW title weighing 193.

    Weights are LIMITS not minimums.

That's true, but he was above the CW limit which was at 190 at the time. So he was a "Heavyweight"

The only risk here is separating too much of the quality.

I think once you get to heavyweight it doesn't really make that much of a difference as proven by Deontay Wilder KOing guys when he was very light heavy weight.

Povetkin KOing guys far superior to his weight etc.

Just leave things as they are.

Jones weighed 193 for the heavyweight title when the cruiserweight limited was 190.
