If he had weighed 189, he could have still fought for the title.

Theres no minimum weights in boxing

Personally, I think there should simply be a weight limit shift from SMW up.

    SMW: 170lbs
    LHW: 185lbs
    CW: 205lbs
    HW: unlimited

These 4 divisions in particular, the guys are simply "larger" than their respective yesteryear peers and the weights should reflect it. 10 pounds from MW to SMW, 15 pounds from SMW to LHW, and 20 pounds from LHW to CW. A new weight class is pointless. The vast majority of who would be SHW are not all that much better than the smaller HW (Wlad, Joshua, Fury are just very good). Povetkin, Hunter, Byrd, etc.....have already proven they are more than enough for most would be SHWs.

Also, Wilder isn't even a SHW, he's just tall, so I hate how he gets lumped in as one. For instance, is Robert Easter Jr a SWW? No. He's definitely the height of one but he's still a LW/JWW because.........weight.

Modern medicine and sports nutrition have made our best athletes bigger and stronger than they've ever been. So a 200 lb minimum weight for a weight class with no upper limit no longer makes any sense. Most of the best HWs of the last two decades have been 225+ lbs. Even Mike Tyson, a comparatively small HW, was around 215 at his peak in the early 90s. So yes, raise the minimum of HW by 20 lbs or so and fill in the "hole" with another weight class.

(personally, i'd also prefer that the new weight class directly below heavyweight, in this case 190 - 220, be renamed as light heavyweight. And then have 168-175 be CW and 175-190 be SCW. I just find it odd that there should be a weight class in between LHW and HW.)

On the other hand, I do agree with the argument that there are too many weight classes, but this issue should be addressed in the lower and middle weight classes. Personally I prefer the UFC's approach of having no weight class be smaller than a 10 lb span. These 4 or 5 lb spans are silly.
