Thing is I don't mind someone bragging about what a great warrior they are (and all the other stuff he comes out with at every opportunity) if they have a strong resume. But Bellew beat a relatively weak fighter (Makabu or something) for a vacant title, defended against a pretty terrible fighter (Flores) and then wanted nothing to do with the top 10 CWs. He saw the money with Haye, took it and lucked out. He's a CW not a HW. But notice he never mentions the top CWs - because he knows he would have no chance against them. He's an opportunist - fair play to that. But he's also Amir Khan level delusional.
I've noticed he seems to make out like the Adonis Stevenson fight never happened, "I've never been found wanting" but he was definitely mentally a broken man in that fight, he wanted out, like the OP said his face said a thousand words, definitely one of the weakest title challenges we've seen in the last five to ten years from a British fighter abroad.
I remember listening to Isaac Chamberlain speaking about certain matchroom fighters who literally suck up to Eddie Hearn. I'm pretty sure Bellew is one of these people.
Tony Bellew is clearly not the sharpest tool in the box. Signs to fight the most injury prone fighter in british boxing today in a rematch, who was retired for almost 4 years, and broke down fighting him. FAILS to line up a substitute & goes through a whole camp for nothing. Has not cashed in on that win. Is now signed to fight him again in a few months, and admits to having no substitutes lined up. Its beyond words, how all his eggs are in one basket. As a boxer he is at best fringe world class at LHW/CW. Admits himself that he bricks it facing a real HW.
Tbf he,s pretty much got more cash from that haye fight than anyone else he could have fought. Pretty much no need for him to fight again. The haye 2 money I,d imagine will favor him...so no really worth fighting anyone else dangerous for what would be a lot less money. He deserves stick for what he claims and he got a bit of luck but sometimes you deserve it. I ve never been a big fan...but you need to give credit where its due. He took the risk against haye who most people including myself thought he,d have no chance of winning. Not only that haye,s always been a dangerous fighter a big hitter etc. Fair play to him I say. There's enough guys out there in this game that didn't get that slightly lucky break...still fighting for peanuts etc. He won,t go down as the best fighter in the world he never was but he will leave the game a solid fighter faculties intact...and made a wad of cash. Pretty rare in this game.
Huge Bellew fan, but calling out Fury was madness and let himself down in commentary of AJ v Takam in my eyes. Ability wise at the end of the day he went through every level and won his world title by brutal ko as a 2nd favourite and having been down himself that in itself commands a level of respect. Do I see him beating Usyk etc? Personally no. However 90% didn't see him beating Haye (I did). He has also said ref v Stevenson saved his life, even his biggest detractors know he was dead on scales at LHW
yeah clocked it a mile off..An interview I watched had Bellew saying " Wheres Eddie I need feeding, I'm a heavy now, wheres he gone, OI EDDIE, are you feeding me"...Hes ingraining himself quite blatantly. Eddies gonna struggle shaking him off !
The Bellew - Hearn thing isn’t a one way street. Hearn is only as relevant as his big name fighters and he’s made an awful lot of money off the back of Bellew, whom potentially has a couple, maybe even 3 more big paydays. It’s Bellew’s personality that has helped to sell his fights and appeal to the more casual audience. Hearn piggy backs on the back of their personalities and achievements. Also, they might actually be good mates.
Bellew is undoubtedly an opportunist but you can't blame him for trying to make the most of what will be a short career. I think he talks a lot of **** but I think it's an act to put bums on seats. He knows he isn't that good and been fortunate, it's why he is trying to fight Haye for a relatively easy payday and not chasing Joshua. You saw on sports personality of the year when they proposed a Joshua fight to him, that was a idea bordering on suicidal, he clearly gestured he wanted nothing to do with Joshua and would run a mile if offered it lol.
Don't know why he wouldn't take the fight aj as his stepped up has proved his Totally beatable basic slow robotic and he doesn't have that lights out power that his fanboys think I don't rate Bellew at all but it's worth taking the chance it's only a matter of time before someone knocks him out or out points him
I agree with this...he could retire a very rich man from this fight. Takam showed that if you have good movement, you can make Joshua look very ordinary. I reckon Bellew’s just playing along with the matchroom myth that makes out that AJ is this unbeatable megastar. Ironically, the one man who would beat AJ is a cruiserweight...Oleksandr Usyk.
Lol Bellew is a matchroom cheerleader any top heavy or cw with the right skill set is capable of beating aj as his stepped up from fighting complete trash cans he has showed to many weaknesses and everyones going on about that klitcshko win it was impressive how he came back to win imo it was klitchsko error more then anything aj done and alot of fanboys think that was a great version of klitchsko because matchroom said it when it was a shell that couldn't pull the trigger when he had the golden boy out of it lol all his done is pick up all furys scraps
It’s not madness calling out Fury. We all know that Bellew is just looking to cash out and it’s one hell of a pay day against someone who last stopped someone nearly 4 years ago (Abel. Chisora and hammer retired) and has been inactive for two years+ I’m no a bellew fan but I don’t blame him and can 100% see why he’s calling Haye/Fury out and at the same time avoiding AJ.
I think Fury give him a real beating. I know point your making but think hits a little bit harder than given credit, and size/weight will exhaust Bellew before late stoppage, potentially more dangerous than a one punch ko.
