The ring announcer said that Ambers had been a stablemate to Canzoneri, and that he was imitating his style. In some ways this was true. Both have an incredibly low guard, and very fast hands. In addition, both proved themselves quite proficient in feints of any kind: hand, shoulder, and head. Still, I found them two very different boxers as Canzoneri is a good outside fighter, a great counterpuncher, and a good defensive fighter. Ambers is a decent outside boxer and the better inside fighter of the two (which would come to light late in the match). 2. There were more exchanges by now, and less feeling-out, and Canzoneri outscored Ambers. Canzoneri. 3. A beautiful left-right combination put Ambers down. He beat the count but was dropped by a sloppy Canzoneri right hand. Canzoneri. 4. Canzoneri consistenly kept his jab in Ambers' face. Canzoneri. 5. Ambers' punches were starting to regain some power to them. Ambers. 6. Quite out of style for Canzoneri, he wildly attacked Ambers, leaping after him, landing two looping right hands and two leaping left hooks. It was close trading after that, with Canzoneri getting the better of it. Canzoneri. 7. Slow-moving. Canzoneri. 8. Among the most evenly-fought rounds. Both were attempting to score with uppercuts inside. Canzoneri. 9. Canzoneri. 10. Canzoneri. 11. Ambers threw a series of fast left uppercuts inside. It was a step in the right direction for Ambers I think, but it still had no effect on Canzoneri. Canzoneri. 12. The announcer said that Canzoneri throws a low left at Ambers. However, watching it on a speed of .25, it's fairly clear that it was a legal beltline shot. Also, Ambers did not appear hurt long. He doubled over a little, and quite briefly when hit, but only seemed hurt for a couple of seconds. He continued fighting as if nothing had happened. The round was taken away from Canzoneri, but I say that's wrong. Canzoneri. 13. A lot of inside action. Ambers making a pretty good rally. Ambers. 14. Much like 13, but Ambers was beginning to tire more. Canzoneri. 15. Canzoneri may/ may have not produced a flash knockdown via right hand. It could have just as reasonably been named a slip. I honestly don't know which I think makes more sense. What do you guys say? Both tied up a lot in this round. Canzoneri. So, clearly a white-wash. Even if you don't agree with my account, which has it 13 rounds for Canzoneri, 2 for Ambers, you will probably agree that Canzoneri won the fight hands down. Verdict: NOT a classic fight, but one of Canzoneri's best performances. His best since Chocolate. Give it a look, at least once. However, the film was mostly sped up, which makes it impossible to view seriously. So I watched it on a speed of .75, which I found to be most accurate to what the fight probably looked like. That's what I would suggest to all of you.
I found watching this ag .75 was the best compromise for definite, William. Even when the speed fluctuated a bit it still remained watchable. Here are my card and notes on it: Tony Canzoneri v Lou Ambers 1 Excellent technical battle between two ATGs. This was a very high level fight which was mostly fought at range and was relatively clinch free. Canzoneri's head movement and anticipation in this one were other worldly at times. His feinting and double feinting followed by sharp counter jabs were a riddle Ambers tried to solve and in the middle part of the fight he just couldn't. But to his credit, Ambers kept trying to come up with strategies to unlock the traps being set and had a measure of success in the later rounds. My scoring here is a touch speculative due to the nature of the shortened rounds filmed here so is based on what I saw. Nor sure what the official cards had for this one beyond a UD but there was no question that Canzoneri won this. 1 9-10 (close. Quality sticking and moving by both fighters) 2 10-9 (Ambers getting caught more as he comes in) 3 10-7 (I was thinking how well Canzoneri was timing Ambers in this round when he punctuated it by dropping him with a perfect straight right. The follow up KD was a result of the previous punch and Ambers was lucky it was the end of the round) 4 10-9 (shortened round. Amber started well, particularly considering the way the previous round had ended but Canzoneri started timing him again as the round wore on) 5 10-9 (another shortened round Canzoneri is a nightmare to face - defensively he's like Niccolino Loche but with a punch) 6 9-10 (close. Better round from Ambers) 7 10-10 (clever from Ambers, who was getting outjabbed so starts leading with the left hook and straight right instead. Canzoneri still having success though) 8 10-9 (a bit rougher and more clinching as both fighters try to land uppercut in close but this suits Canzoneri better) 9 10-9 (Ambers struggling to crack Canzoneri's code) 10 9-10 (close. Could have gone either way) 11 10-9 (Canzoneri getting the better of Ambers on the outside) 12 10-9 13 10-10 (Ambers has his moments and puts Canzoneri under some rare pressure but Tony holds his own) 14 9-10 (better round from Ambers) 15 9-10 (close. Ambers may have just edged it) Canzoneri 145-140 Ambers Canzoneri wins by 8 rounds to 5 with 2 even on my card.
