Anyone else a big fan? Great fighters, great mesh of styles. There's a little bit of everything here, some good punching, some slick and crafty movement from both guys, skill and guts.

I consider Canzoneri one of the most interesting and creative fighters I've ever watched. There's a strange genius about him. He's in my top twenty p4p list. Wonderful fighters, and a classic fight. :good

I think better of him every time I see him actually. He has one of the strangest styles i think I've ever seen, and his head movement is incredible. Saw a video today where he slipped about 5 jabs in a row with the smallest possible nod. He lets his chin and hands dangle out there, lets the other guy go first, and then slams him with the appropriate counter. To be honest he reminds me somewhat of Jones at times when he's fighting like that. But on the other hand he can box and lead in a burleyesque fashion as well. Very interesting guy, not enough discussion about him as well.

Same with Kid Chocolate actually. I understand why Sugar Ray was a fan... I can see a lot of his slickness, movement, and punching in SRR's style, actually.

From top to bottom an excellent fight..One of the alltime great fights to see two elite level practitioners going at it..And actually going at it, a brutal chessmatch at times and at others a straight up war...Great action, great skills, two great athletes.

I loooove watching Kid Chocolate do his thang.

My fav fight ever. :happy I watch it like once a week and never get tired of it.

Both are amongst my fav fighters. Canzoneri reminds me a bit of Roy Jones with his aggressive, hands low, counter-puncher style but with less speed and security margins. At times youl don´t know if a punch landed on him or if he slipped it until you stop the film at that point. Very good and underrated puncher as well - taking out Ambers in three is a big thing. Chocolate is just so damned skilled but not like those guys considered skilled today who are spoilers or purely defensive fighters. He was slick, smooth, skilled and aggressive. He´s one of the fighters Robinson tried to copy. Sad that he f*cked his career up with coke and stuff. Still one of th great little guys.
That fight is just awesome. There is everything in there there is in boxing. They show everything that´s possible at all ranges.

Yes. He is also one of the fighters with the smallest hands.

 Yes! I said so quite often in the past. Canzi doesn´t have Roy´s speed but makes up for it with better anticipation, timing and judge of distance. He is my poster boy for the argument that low hands aren´t a bad thing even if you don´t have the speed of a Jones.

    :happy

    edit:
btw. how did you score this fight? I don´t know who actually won it. One day I have the Keed ahead on the other day Canzi depending whose style I aprreciate more at the moment. Such a close fight.

Great fight. Great to see guys who can adjust. And the Kid -- after Tony's body punches have slowed him down -- shows that he can fight inside to, if he has to, even though that isn't his first choice.

I must admit i found Chocolate to lack the finesse of his predecessor chocolate negro kid.

Good thread. Kid Chocolate is just so watchable.

Canzoneri's in my top twenty as well. He has to be. Certainly above the likes of Ray Leonard or Julio Cesar Chavez, who are generally rated higher but don't necessarily deserve it.

Because of the way he invited punches, Canzoneri features at #2 on my 'can't believe he wasn't knocked out more often' list. #1 on that list is Panama Al Brown.

Very low guard, which the lightning quick Kid pierced a few times, but one hell of a fighter, from a golden age in which there were many.

was just about to make a thread about this fight, but searched and found this. the range of skills on show here is just mind-blowing. no idea who won either...

a rare fight in which two greats totally got the best out of each other, and their 'bests' were quite something!

Great fighters but I wish there was a better quality version of it. I can't break the fight down as I like to notice subtle things clearly.

B,slight correction. You state above that Canzoneri "took out Ambers in three"
but all of their THREE bouts between Canzi and Ambers were 15 round decision bouts, with Ambers taking 2 from the aging Canzoneri.
Lest we forget :One year later after their first bout,on Nov 24,1933, Tony Canzoneri knocked out Kid Chocolate in two rounds..
One other point: Tony Canzoneri had 175 fights, and was kod only ONCE,in
his last fight against a murderous puncher,Al Davis, who Tony would g=have played with ,when in his prime. My dad saw that bout in1939,and he told me
many hard-bitten boxing fans were crying. So popular was Canzi...

Seeing Canzoneri's name reminded that Jake Donovan (a top boxing writer on the web) is the grandson of Canzoneri's chief sparring partner.
