Yeah, I’m bumping a thread from 14 years ago that got no responses. I watched the 15 minutes or so of footage that exists on YouTube this evening that takes in rounds 8-12 and then skips to round 14. DeMarco was getting the better of things in round 8, then Akins fought back a bit in round 9 and dropped DeMarco twice at the end of round 10. To his credit, Tony came back and fought well in round 11 and then put Akins down in round 12, looking like he might make an improbable comeback before Akins scored another knockdown in round 13 and finished DeMarco off in round 14. Obviously, not a complete fight but what transpired between 8 and 14 suggested a truly great one transpired. I’d love to see the rest of it in the same way I’d like to see the rest of Basilio-DeMarco 1 which has a similar amount of footage. The ‘50s was certainly a great era for the welterweight division, with some outstanding championship fights.
Akins is so much fun to watch. He comes to fight. This is the longest version that I know to exist of this fight. It wasnt shown on TV so there would be no kinescope of it. Both Basilio-DeMarco fights exist complete.
That’s good to know about Basilio-DeMarco 1. Basilio-DeMarco 2 I’ve seen in fulll many, many times - absolutely one of my favourite fights.
Tony DeMarco,Virgil Akins, Basilio, Gavilan, Vince Martinez...all were cracking fighters. Akins win over Martinez for the title was brilliant, really shame for Martinez who was a class fighter. Gavilan is a favourite but DeMarco was so fun to watch, great power in both hands. Lots of his fights about though mostly highlighted too. His win over Johnny Saxton was great, Saxton may have been mob controlled and boring as hell but he was a damn difficult fighter to beat but DeMarco was unstoppable that night.
