He could have been pretty succesful at this weight. Unlike the 5 ft 6 ins Dwight Muhammad Qawi who was a freakishly short 175 pounder, and Eusebio Pedroza an unusually tall Feather,Galento was n't meant to be a heavyweight. He was carrying an excess of at least 56 lbs. Pedroza and Qawi were naturally the weights they fought at. Thoughts ?
but..but...then he wouldn't be tony galento. and i think his gut added character, thank you very much
God, this board is on ****ing crack. Galento was in really good shape at 224 against Lou Nova, thats his ideal weight for his prime run. He was a very stocky guy. He got down to 180 something when he was 19. But so what? Tim Witherspoon weighed that much when he was in his early 20s...maybe he should have been a Light-Heavyweight too.
Gallento was a prety big framed heavyweight for his day. With better conditioning, he might have been able to get under the curent cruiserweigh limit, but making 175 would be outside the realm of possibility.
Galento was a legitimate heavyweight. Sure, 240 pounds he was out of shape. But he's not built for 175.
Galento waws a fat slob and he still almost knocked out Joe Louis with a grazing punch, Shows how overrated Louis was huh
Tim Witherspoon was a 6 ft 3 ins well conditioned heavyweight when he fought Larry Holmes. Galento was 5 ft 9 ins. and he looked very flabby in all his major fights.
When he bothered to get in shape, Galento at 220ish. This man is not making Light Heavy healthy unless he cuts off his head or one of those huge legs. This content is protected
He could have been a light heavy , but I doubt he would have had much success , boxing with only one leg.:-(
Gallento was out of shape in all his major fights, but he was still a big framed fighter. Much more like David Tua than Dwight Muhammad Qawi in terms of overal build. If he had better dedication he might have made a well conditioned fighter of 5' 9'' in the 200-210lb range.
Just watched Galento fight Al Ettore, and going by this fight he seemed to greatly rely on his weight and strength advantages in the clinches. He mauled Ettore for 8 rounds, with frequent headbutts, forearms and elbows, until knocking Ettore over and out of the ring with left hooks. Around 220 pounds was probably his best fighting weight. He could have made even 190 pounds surely but additional speed or conditioning weren't going to help him much. He was a mauler and a brawler.
Lol yeah he did Lose to that bum Marciano when he was pushing 40 so I guess that is something you white people can brag about
O.K., so we have established that Louis and Marciano were not good. Who were the halfway decent heavyweights of history then?
