Um yes, they are. You should humble yourself and take notes from Louis. You have nothing to teach him, and he has nothing to be ashamed of.
Worthless hero worshipping masquerading as argumentation. Boxing isn't chess-- even the very best boxers in the world have off nights and "make bad moves." Contrary to what guys like you and Perry seem to think, everything Louis does isn't Godly or Perfect.
What a dumb pseudo-rebuttal. I bet you Louis would nod his head and laugh sheepishly if I watched that footage with him.
Your incredulous stupidity, saying things like "Louis should be ashamed of himself," doesn't warrant a thoughtful rebuttal. If you want good conversation, strike up good conversation. I'm sure he'd laugh sheepishly after knocking out out for constantly harassing him about getting tagged by Galento. Seriously though, if you want, you can watch a documentary where Louis watches this fight with Galento in the 70's. He wasn't laughing at getting hit, that's for sure.
:zzz Actually, you've changed my mind. Galento's lunging crouching tiger, flying squirrel hooks were such amazing, deadly punches that no heavyweight would have been able to avoid them, except maybe by the grace of god. Ridiculous for me to think that an ATG like Louis shouldn't ever be hit with those kinds of punches multiple times in a fight.
They are still wide, maybe so wide they were out of Louis's field of vision? Galento's speed at throwing his hooks does not compare to good modern left hookers, like Tua,Frazier, imo
I was going to respond to the question was first posed by mcvey "how on earth did Louis with those wide left hooks" with the answer that left hooks are strange like that, sometimes you just don't see them come from out wide, or rather you see them too late, or you simply cannot judge the distance and trajectory correctly.
Ernest Hemingway wrote a piece about it,getting the hook out wide ,so wide the opponent doesn't see it coming.I'd like to have had Louis's thoughts on it
Another possible factor in this fight : Joe Louis really hated Tony Galento and probably was so zeroed in on hurting Tony he neglected defensive skills. It's no excuse, but it does happen. Apparently Tony, among other things, had made some ***ual comments about or towards Louis's wife, which is usually a good way to get a man angry.
He allegedly did a lot more than that too, ringing the Louis household to deliver racial slurs to he and his wife, calling him all sorts of names in the ring etc. By the same token i think it's out there somewhere that Louis wanted to punish him for some time before ending it.
I wonder how much Louis knew about Galento. How many if his fights he'd seen, what he knew about his technique (or lack thereof), etc.
Galento was certainly no class act, but it was basically a tactic to throw his opponents off their game. He was sometimes gracious towards his beaten opponents, once the outcome was in no doubt.
Why do you say things like "Joe Louis should be ashamed of himself," and then expect some kind of intellectual argument. This isn't hero worship. It's dealing with idiots 101.
