The prime, 1939 #1 contender version of Tony Galento should be favored over which of the following men? Tyson Fury Wlad K. Deontay Wilder Kubrat Pulev Luis Ortiz Anthony Joshua
With or without PEDs? Every fighter on that list is a cheater. If Galento was on PEDs he would be charged with "moiderin' da bum"
Outside of an early puncher's chance, Galento would have few paths to victory. A points win would be 100-1 against for him. I'd pick Galento to lose every fight. He was just too short, and crude. His skill level and build isn't ranked at heavyweight today, yet in his day he achieved a #1 contender ranking by ring magazine
I might back him against Wilder. Deontay has a knack of getting tagged and dropped by the sloppy ones, and if Galento tagged him they'd better have smelling salts ringside.
I'm starting to think Wilder is decent. While his power might be overrated a tad, and he cherry picks title opponents, he can box some use his legs. While I think his chin is suspect, it has been good enough to survive a shaky moment or two vs nonstop ten contenders. Galento could KO him. The trouble is Galento would not solve the jab, would take too many right hands and simply would not close the distance gap to land much. But man it would be fun while it lasts! Joshua beat a top 40-50 ranked guy in his first title defense. His opponent was slow, and not very skilled but he didn't fold or quit trying to win like some others do. In that sense, Galento would be a welcome addition to the heavyweight division today.
This is the key, imo. Hard to see a slow fighter with a 10-inch height disadvantage and 11-inch reach deficit landing flush on the Wilder's jaw. I think Galento would eat jabs and straight rights all night until he either gets stopped or does something to get himself dq'ed.
1939 was actually a pretty strong year once you get past the anomaly of Galento getting to the top. There were a number of better fighters ranked under him. So how would he do? I would be inclined to favour him over Wilder, and Pulev. I have not seen enough of Ortiz to make a pick. Klitschko, Fury, and Joshua are much better fighters, but he would have a punchers chance against them if they slipped up. If he fought Tyson Fury, I would pay to see the press conference.
he should never be allowed in the ring, one of those guys who could be clean for years and would still benefit from what he has taken up to now. he can box tho and he has serious power(duh), he might win the easiest of all those guys.
I favor him over everyone on the list, except the two undisputed champions, Fury and Klitschko. Galento to me is eerily similar to Tua. Very similar builds, and size. Both were short, stout, heavy punchers who could launch deadly hooks. Galento was maybe a bit less refined than Tua, and was probably too confident in himself to smooth some of his rough edges.
