Tony Galento v. David Tua's Opponents (through 2005)?

Power is not worth two buckets of warm spit at world level.

If it was, then Tua might have held an alphabet title at some point.

He might even have beaten somebody ranked in the top ten by Ring Magazine.

An ounce of technique, is worth a pound of power.

 

Schmeling was the far greater technical fighter vs Tua. Not in the same ballpark.

 

Well, Galento wouldn't be fighting 3 guys a night, that's for sure.
Most of Tonys career consist of weekly and monthly back to back fights.

 

I think he'd have a reasonably good chance of catching Masakev or an old Moorer. He'd still be an underdog.

Where is the basis for picking Nova over Tua? What on his record suggests he beats Tua?
Being ko'd twice by crude Tami Mauriello?
Ko'd twice by Lee Savold?
Losing to Baksi? Losing to Lee Oma! How about being outboxed by Maxie "feather fist" Rosenbloom?

 

Lou Nova would get splattered by Tua. Unless you can withstand his shots (basically about 1% of all fighters who ever lived) or can outbox him without getting caught then sooner or later you'd be on the canvas.

 

The bottom line is that he beat better fighters than Tua beat, he was a far more successful as a contender than Tua, and he was much better than the people Tua beat.

The default assumption is that Nova would beat Tua, unless you come up with a blinding stylistic argument to the contrary.

If only 1% of fighters who had ever lived could withstand his shots, then he would not have come up short so consistently in his big fights.

Plenty of fighters could withstand his shots, including some who were not noted for their durability.

 

Tua came up short three times in his prime career. Against Ike (one of those 1% who could take his shots), against Byrd (slippery enough to avoid them) and against Lennox (legend). Tua was easy to box into a shell which could prevent you from getting KTFO, hence why a couple of lesser fighters like Wooden boxed him to a decision. But if you went at him head on you'd be taking a nap, more often than not.

 

Well Hasim Rahman lasted the distance against him, and he got stopped by a former middleweight.

Jeff Wooden, Cisse Salif, Robert Hawkins?

These guys must have been tremendous fighters to go the distance with him, if only 1% of the fighters in history could withstand his punches.

I am going to give you a reality check here.

His vaunted knockout record was built against sub par opposition, and whenever he fought somebody ranked in the top ten, his vaunted power suddenly evaporated.

This is not somebody who it took a great fighter to beat period!
