I mentioned Wooden already, as well as Tua's propensity to shut down against fighters who boxed him. Did Wooden go toe to toe with Tua? No, he kept him at bay with his jab and kept turning him to stop him getting set. Salif kept him at range as well, and smothered him in close. Neither man took huge punishment off Tua for those reasons.

I didn't say Tua was hard to outbox. Lots of fighters were leading on the cards against him before he came back to stop them. That's why I rate his power so highly.

Hell, anyone that gives Galento a shot in this matchup needs institutionalising.

Most of Galento's losses were the result of a grueling schedule against seasoned vets while having only about 31 regional amateur fights before turning pro on a whim. In contrast, Tua was an Olympian and only had one really grueling year when he debuted and that was mostly against other inexperienced fighters.

I think properly managed, Galento has a similar career to Tua. I think Galento could potentially beat anyone that Tua did, and potentially lose to the same men.

So what you are saying is that a guy with a decent jab, and some boxing ability , can survive him.

It doesn't even take an elite fighter to do it.

If you look at my previous posts, you will see that I picked him over Galento reluctantly, but I refused to pick him over Nova.

His record simply doesn't warrant that.

I feel that anybody who makes Galento a prohibitive favorite over a very good contender needs a reality check.

Anybody who picks him over an all time great (as often happens), needs a major reality check!

 

Assessing a fighters opponents based on ranking, is far from being an infallible method.

For example the best unranked Cleveland Williams, was obviously much better than the post bullet injury version, who manged to hang onto his ranking.

However, if a fighters results against ranked opposition, are very different from their results against unranked opposition, then that should set an alarm bell ringing!

 

I have never said that Galento was a great fighter.

 

Galento lost to ranked and unranked opponents alike.

 

He hit his stride after Joe Jacobs became his manager. In that time he only lost to Buddy, Max, Louis, and Godoy.

 

And surprise, almost everyone had a disproportionate amount of losses compared to similarly classed fighters today.
