I think Galento has a better chance of stopping Rahman than Rahman has of stopping him or outboxing him. Rahman was suspect to dirty tactics, he couldn't handle Holyfield's fouls on the inside and after being outboxed the whole fight Tua destroyed him with an illegal punch that turned the tide of the fight. Rahman also had poor recovery skills and dug bigger holes for himself, he was clueless when hurt by Lewis, Tua, Oleg, and Wlad, doing that stupid tactic of backing up with his arms outstretched or doing a poor man's Rope A Dope. It's not a sure thing but my money would be on Galento fouling the crap out of Rahman, rattling him, and stopping him.
Can't think of many top fighters Rahman beat the **** out of. Meehan maybe. Not really his style. He kind of jabbed his way to victory most of the time. In his signature knockout wins, he caught Lewis with a looping right as he stupidly laughed against the ropes, and managed to stop Sanders after he gassed from beating the **** out of Rahman.
Rahman would be putting a very heavy jab in his face all night until the inevitable tko or lopsided points loss for Galento. I wouldn't bet on Galento to pull off a late fight miracle.
This one could go either way. Rahman should win. But, he could definitely get roughed up, caught and stopped. Galento has many faults. But the guy could punch. And I see no convincing evidence that Galento is any worse than Oleg Maskaev. And, he iced Rahman twice.
Yeah you'd have to favor Rahman here based on skill and athleticism, but Galento would definitely be the more durable of the two and his dirty tactics would be an x-factor that couldn't be ignored. In the modern era you'd have to favor Rahman by wide decision/late stoppage or DQ, but these are different times - Galento could get away with a lot more than in the modern era.
What is this athletic advantage? Rahman was slow of hand and foot. Galento caught up too quicker guys in Nova and Louis. Both Rahman and Galento were physically powerful men with neither probably holding much advantage over the other. Galento is without question the more durable of the two. Skill advantage? Rahman could throw a jab and occasionally bomb right hands, but he couldn't counter as noted by Stewart and had horrible defense. Galento could brawl and counter as Joe Louis found out. I think in your last sentence you are saying Galento wouldl get away with less in the modern era? Did the modern era stop Rahman from getting mutilated by Holyfield's dirty tactics? Did the modern era save Rahman from Tua's frustrated left hook well after the bell? And make no mistake Galento is a money man in any era, he would get his share of freebies.
Rahman could plod his way to a decision over Galento. Rahman was a strong guy. But I wouldn't be surprised if he gets knocked right out of the ring either.
If Galento got under Louis' jab and scored with left hook counters, he can get under and time Rahman's much slower and telegraphed jab. And if all else fails, Rahman was stationary, Galento would bull in and grab where Rahman was clueless how to defend himself on the inside, letting Holyfield absolutely abuse him.
It depends if Galento shows up ready to fight like he did against Louis or Nova, I think he has this. If Galento shows up in poor shape like he did against the Baer Bros, he's gonna lose a decision. But that's a man at the end of his career on his worse nights, it would be like picking the Rahman of the Povetkin fight to lose. No kidding.
I'll take the guy whose reputation is built on knocking out an ATG over the guy whose rep is built off knocking down an ATG prior to receiving a vicious beatdown.
Imagine Galento being qualified as even a Tyson sparring partner? I cant even make a Galento match ,because i would know i was trolling since he wouldn't be ranked in a top say 30 spot in the 90's ,hes a weaker smaller and slower version of Butter Bean who didnt even have a jab ,Bean had that too...lol.
Rahman should take it on paper, but I would not be shocked if Galento knocked him out. Much would depend on how strict the officiating was.
