Nova would be a top HW contender in any pre 1980s era. And a top cruiserweight contender today.

Yup, I'll probably get slandered for this because this place has a weird love-fest with old-school fighters, but I think a large part of the reason Louis looked as good as he did, was because of the people across the ring with him. I don't think he'd look nearly as impressive in later eras, especially seeing as he was dropped by the likes of Galento and Buddy Baer.

Louis would clean house in the 70s. Only Ali would challenge him.

One of the most lopsided polls I’ve ever seen here. And for good reason.

I don't know why people underestimate Galento. I get the feeling if we could put Galento against Williams or John Ruiz or Ike Ibeabuchi, people would be surprised at how well Galento does.

    Haha. Good one.

Dubois’ balance was notably shocking in his fight vs Usyk. He might want to get his middle ear checked out. He couldn’t hold his feet. Lol.

I’m sure I read a quote of Max Baer saying something like there was something “wrong” with his legs and that they didn’t feel “right”’when he fought Louis - as if it was an abstract issue having nothing to do with the punches that Louis laid on him.

By “Cop a wobble” I just meant that Galento might catch Cleve with something that could momentarily hurt/cause him to stagger/wobble but not cause him to go down or at least not out.

Galento could never succeed in the 70s only skilled fighters like Oscar Bonavena have a shot at giving the likes of Ali a tough bout… Galento is fat but he’s also a guy who fought 111 times as a pro, he knew how to fight, it was ugly but Ali’s way of fighting was its own whacky thing. Louis underestimated him for the same reason we do and said as much… look at how Galento dropped Louis look at the feet, he was a very good fighter not special but good / solid.

The irony that the same guy calling Norton a club fighter is praising this guy's skills and calling him a very good fighter

Bonavena would destroy Galento cmon now. Bonavena is crude by 70s standards but looks great in comparison to stiffs from the 30s and 40s

Okay. I was wondering whether I had ever copped a wobble. (I drove a cab for years. It could have happened.)

    :lol::lol::lol:

The expression does have that “vibe” to it.

Suffice to say, wobble and gobble don’t sound too dissimilar.

If you copped the latter whilst being a cab driver, well then, good on your old mate.

Driver’s “tip” we might call it. :D

You can find flaws in any top fighter's style, even top 10 ATGs had seemingly glaring flaws, it doesn't mean it's an automatic loss against another top fighter.
His jab ruined Baer's face and clearly snapped his head back whenever it landed. Nova undoubtedly had one of the hardest jabs of his era.
He used shoulder rolls and ducks to get out of the way of blows meant to counter his jab. He also showed an immense chin, heart and stamina in the fight, as he did against Galento by sustaining a prolonged, bloody beatdown for fourteen rounds before the referee stopped it.
Nova defeated Tommy Farr, Lee Ramage, Abe Simon and Max Baer, but he's a target.
In any case, this target still had a higher peak than Cleveland Williams, whose own pinnacle was a draw with Eddie Machen, something Nova easily matched not withstanding his own victories, as he drew with Bob Pastor once. The point therefore stands, if Galento can beat Nova, he chews through Williams with more ease.
We can say styles make fights but Williams didn't have half the jab, chin, stamina, defense or resume that Lou had, styles wouldn't play into this one.
