You saying he was successful on paper?

Cooney absolutely annihilates him. Can you imagine the left hook to that porkers mid section? Also is more than capable of KO'ing him with shots to the head as well. Cooney inside 3 rounds.

No. Louis top 2 heavyweight champion. Been that way for many decades. Only Ali is rated above him.

The last thing Cooney should do technically is go to Galentos body. In process he would put himself in range of Galentos hook. Best game plan would be to pick his shots off his jab at distance and then land the haymaker hook. In other words set the power shot up.

    I disagree.
Louis took some incredible shots by guys like Galento and Baer, and kept fighting.

Maybe his chin doesn't look that great on Boxrec, but anyone who has seen his fights often knows the kind of punishment Louis has weathered and fought through.

Ali got flash knocked down a bunch of times and is known as the best chin ever. Funny how that goes right?

Louis having a bad chin is a modernist argument used to bolster their size agenda. After all the arguing they've done on the behalf of size importance, they'll never admit Louis had a great chin when he was knocked down by guys like Braddock.

How many times was Louis knocked down in his career and would you put him on a heavyweight champs top 10 strongest chins?

Probably not top 10, but not "nowhere near it," like you said.

It was written in 1936 that Louis put to bed all doubts that he could "take it" after absorbing so many hellacious right hands from Schmeling for 12 rounds. His chin was not as good as say Dempsey but certainly better than Lewis as an example who was koed twice by single punches.

Everything goes well with Cooney if he can avoid getting tapped on the jaw.
If he let's Galento touch his jaw then he will do what he did in the Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes and George Foreman fights.

No, Louis really did not have a great chin. Getting rocked by a SMW might have had something to do with that.

Misty eyed romanticism over a fat little Italian. Keep hoping, Sons of the Italinate Peninsula, your day will return... I guess. (Just don't hold your breath).

People want to bash Gerry for his love of booger sugar but think it quaint that Galento drank a well of beer everyday and lost to total ham and eggers because of it. In their eyes it only makes him greater.

I'll even go further and say that the version of Jimmy Young that Cooney beat himself beats the best that Galento actually beat.

Cooney kiils Galento. Can you imagine that fat slob taking a Cooney left hook or left uppercut to the body?

    Yes, absolutely.

Lou Nova was a very highly touted # 1 contender when Galento fought him, and some people were actually picking him to beat Joe Louis.

The Galento fight was meant to be a mere formality for him.

The win saw Galento installed as the new #1 contender, above about four better fighters.

That by any definition counts as a successful contender.

Why is Tua rated in the top 50 and Galento not in the top 100?

Which people picked him to beat Louis? Name two!
You have to answer another question here. Why were people assuming it would be a mere formality for Nova, whose only wins of note were over a past it Max Baer whose hands were a wreck and in and outer Farr who never won a fight in the US? It just shows how lightly regarded Galento was !
