Okay, sorry, to be clearer, he is not doing enough on fight night, imho. I have always liked him when I have seen him interviewed, although I don't see much of his local stuff (I'm in the middle of nowhere in Derbyshire), but when it comes to the fights he seems to be on auto-pilot, not liking criticism but not doing enough in the ring to get people behind him. On Saturday I found him very dull to watch, the only time he woke up was when Maloney criticised him afterwards and then Jeffries got defensive rather than putting his hand up. He can do all the local media work he wants, and make all the right noises about the NE fight scene, but if he keeps performing with that lack of fire when it comes to the actual fights he will never build anything other than a local fanbase and will not achieve success on the level that has previously been talked about as possible for him. He needs to appeal to mainstream fans as well as local if he wants any sort of widespread acclaim. In that context, I thought that Saturday's fight, and the public disagreement with Maloney (and, to a lesser extent, his trainer) were a major backward step. But apologies for not being clearer with my initial post and thank you for calling me on it!
No worries. As I've said I haven't seen his last fight but sounds like same old, same old with him. This is the key point I think - In his mind he had already made it! Sunderland and the majority from there have a small-town, close knit mentality. Jeffries became a local celebrity after the Olympics, everyone shaking his hand, everyone knows who he is etc. With this he probably felt he had made it - he lost his hunger. Maloney wanted to push him to Sunderland as Hatton was to Man City - red and white short/mighty mackem. Thing is though Hatton was hunger when he started his pro career and Jeffries, sadly wasn't. Still hope he can turn it around though - tbh he more than likely only really cares about what the people of Sunderland think, so a few impressive, regular fights and he will be back on track.
Hopefully, really hope that you are right. I used to think he had enough to do very well, but I have to say that there were very few reasons for optimism on Saturday. The opponent gave him nothing to beat, just came to last the distance, but Jeffries seemed to have no creativity or energy to counter that, as though he was just aiming to get to the final bell himself. Then afterwards he just blamed it on a late change of opponent. Looked like he needed to get some fire in his belly and acknowledge that some of the fault lies with him. I agree that a good night would get him right back on track, with a good local atmosphere, but if he fights in that style against someone like Anderson he's going to get a shock.
im sure morbys been beaten by lightmiddles, if not stopped then floored by them. havent checked boxrec, but im sure its correct' an as for amateur acheivement, maybe a rich dad, and being popular, ie ticket sales, make up for talent, he's been put in a position that he can't live up to.:bbb
I think he has more to offer. He needs to listern though, comes acroos ok until he gets critisied then he throws the dummy out. He needs to get his timing right, it was way out,he was falling into the other chap every time he punched, it was shite. And his body punching was non existant, anderson would walk through him
I like jaffa i am told he only boxed one round in 14 month s he won every round i really hope he turns the corner , thought Maloney should of kept his comments behind closed doors...Is anderson not boxing groves next ??????
I don't think Jeffries is very intelligent, which is his big problem imo. Can't handle criticism at all and you can't improve if you are not taking criticism on board.
Yep he's thick. You only have to look at him tbh he has that thick look about him. Reporter: You alright Tony? Jeffries: Aye is that some sorta rhetorical question like?....dunna what'ya mean man.. Reporter: I just asked how you been... Jeffries: Aye right....thought ya meant am i all right like....i got a decent jab..so can't be. This content is protected
Baffled the guy won a medal at the Olympic games. It's astounding. If you looked at the guy with no prior knowledge I'd lay 1000/1 he didn't medal. Who the **** did he face?
1st Round- Fought the infamous Bye. Won that with relative ease although he did have some trouble dealing with Bye. 2nd Round- Eleider Álvarez [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEB2zhcPm18[/ame] 3rd Round- Imre Szellő [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_UBmzfwAkI[/ame]
He got defensive when Maloney criticised but Jeffries has a history of crying when people don't say things he likes.
