Always hard to compare different generations of fighters. IMO Mundine Snr would have done a lot better than your prediction above. Sibson KO'd 31 of his 55 victims. But Mundine was no mug and, but for a legend in Monzon, would surely have won a world title - particularly if he was around these days when there's a world title for everyone with a pair of gloves!
A motivated Sibson would win this I feel, although I would not be surprised in the least if he was behind on the cards before getting the KO. Mundine Snr. was a very good boxer with a decent punch, unfortunately his terrible chin would be his downfall against most heavy handed middleweights who would force the issue with him, good fight while it lasts though.
Mundine was a very good smooth boxer-puncher.I think his height, reach and excellent power would bother Sibbo a lot initially. eventually his glass chin would fail him though.
Bad Bennie Briscoe did a number on him in Paris, Sibbo in London could do the same, albeit not using a Constant attack Like Bennie, but Catching Tony with a Big Left Hook Then opening up on Him - Sibbo launched Very Fast powerful shots when he had Someone on the Hook. But Mundine could make it a bit Ugly to begin with.
Glass chin?? What a totally unoriginal response. Mantequilla, Im not directing this opinion at you, but to fight fans in general.Tony Mundines chin is purely a fabricated load of rubbish created by the wankers in the press, and the **** ants unwilling to cop a solid right on the chin. Mundine snr faught some extremely tough men, and the ones he came unstuck against were very unorthodox fighters. Monzon and Rodriguez excluded. To be KOd by Monzon is not a disgrace. To be caught out early by Rodriquez was unfortunate. To be KOd by Mahunga is excusable, as Mundine Snr was still a kid. For the sake of personal knowledge, and appreciation of Mundine, take a look at his fighting record. If Mundine Snrs chin was questionable against quality oponents, then Jeff Fenechs chin is more questionable.. Nelson 2, Grove, Holiday. All KO by. Mundine wasnt a comfortable M/W for many years. Yet, he was continually in line for a legitimate title challenge, or fighting very highly regarded men, during a very highly regarded era. The "glass jaw" story is lame, tired, an injustice and steriotyped. People need to accept Mundine Snr was a class act, in the era of Monzon and classy Middles.
Dad and i used to cheer Tony on when i was just a little kid mate. The fact of the matter is he had a suspect jaw and average stamina at times too. You've missed some of his KO losses to lesser fighters too. Tony was a damn good fighter, with some serious power but his durability and stamina held him back a lot. It's no myth at all. There's no need to take it personal, it's just life. His chin isn't comparable to Fenech's, Jeff not only fought for but won world titles at various weights in rapid succession before declining in a fast and ugly fashion.
Fenech faught against one reasonble title holder... not a superstar.. but a bloke with a degree of toughness in Callejas, on his way to winning the 3 world titles. Shiniaki and Payakarun were both very, very, very mediocre. Fenech never unified a single division. If Mundine Snr was to be welcomed to a time of multiple titles, he would have been a world champ. Case closed.
He got iced in a round by journeymen (and I'm being generous calling them that) called Lee Royster and James Marshall not to mention the much smaller Luis Rodriguez. Factor in the KO's to Mahunga and Summerhays and the more acceptable but still damning losses to Briscoe,Monzon,Burnett and Lopez and the only conclusion that can be drawn is that his chin was very, very, very ordinary. Tony was a good fighter but his chin was his Achilles heel. Also Fenech was a much better fighter with a more proven chin as well so why you're bringing his name into it is beyond me. You're not a fan of Anthony "the Man" by any chance?
You THINK he would have been. Maybe yes maybe no. Fenech smashed numerous top 10 fighters over multiple divisions regardless of how you twist it. What fighters did Tony beat better than Fenech's A list? Better still, who did Tony dominate as good as the Nelson Fenech did first time? The only case closed is the one of Tony's jaw.
Fenech should have never even been included in this conversation... Jeff was a higher calibre fighter.. Tony was a crowd pleaser who like John said, wasn't blessed with the natural talent or stamina as most but made up for it with heart and stubbornness.. I remember him taking on Frank Tate in Stafford and being over powered by Dennis Andries .. Tony was Brave as hell.. If you ever get the chance watch the 1st Nelson v Fenech match at Mirage on Tyson v Ruddock 1 undercard.. Fenech was a different league really.. I don't like Mundine much really ......... his mouth proceeds him..
??? Frank Tate??? Dennis Andries?? Big mouth????? Wrong fellow. Mundine Snr was not a big mouth, nor did he fight these men. He boxed 80 times..... had about 60 kos to his name.... and never spoke out loud. I watched the Fenech/Nelson fight live on cctv... went to the Fenech/Nelson 2...The only truly classy men Fenech got the better of were Carlos Zarate and Mario Martinez.... at the vast end of thier careers. Nelson was ill.... Jerome Coffee isnt a name to remember, Steve McRory isnt remebered, Greg Richardson isnt remembered. In fact, I would place any money bets on it, I could walk into a pub tomorrow, and ask any old timer " name 5 men that Fenech faught".... None would be able. No one even remember who he won the titles from, including the people on this site.... due to the fact, their knowledge of the game is based on stupidity and ignorance relating to Fenech. Perhaps I will appear in the same manner, so be it. My opinion cant be swayed. Jeff, undoubtabley, is our most achieving fighter.... yet, 3 world titles are available to any well directed boxer, with the level of ability.
