Tony Thompson: "American boxing fans won't give the Klitschkos full credit"

    Tony Thompson on the Klitschkos:

“I just think that we’re so used to dominating the heavy part of the sport, that we just found reasons to, you know, put the contenders down, and not give the Klitschkos’ full credit.

“Those are great champions and they are proving their worth, but by the same token, you don’t downplay the challengers that’s come along … well some of them you can, some of the guys have not put any effort towards winning, but I’m not one of those guys,” Thompson says firmly.

“I am putting whatever I have—I might not be an all-time great, everybody knows that I walked in off the street 27 years old for the first time, and I put on boxing gloves and I think I’m having a very successful career.

“People tend to downplay my accomplishments, and you can’t do that.”

Unlike some of his American peers, Thompson sees the Klitschko brothers as role models both inside and outside of the ring, and feels that if they were not from Eastern Europe but were instead Wally and Vic Klitschko from the American Midwest, they would be huge stars here: “David Beckham, American-style,” chuckles Thompson.

“We are so arrogant to think that nobody else can be as dominant as we are, but when Mike Tyson was dominant we loved it, we clamored for Mike, we did everything to keep him in the spotlight even though he wasn’t that great of a human being,” Thompson observes.

“These guys [the Klitschkos] are great fighters as well as great human beings, and we really don’t want anything to do with them because they’re not Americans.”

Tony Thompson, however, believes that a revival for the heavyweight division in America is very close – as close as July 7, when he intends to take back the heavyweight crown for America.

“I think once we have a heavyweight champion, [US boxing fans] will be a little more kinder to the American heavyweight fighters,” Thompson says.

“Also I think American TV will come back out and watch American heavyweights again. We need a figure here and I’m looking to be that figure.”

Well, I absolutely agree with what Thompson said here...he seems like I nice guy. Nice he may be, but Wladimir is going to KO him again. :bbb
If Thompson were fighting anyone other than a Klitschko, I'd root for him.

  6. The Tiger is saying truth. He's gonna fight hard. Not saying he wins but he will fight harder then Haye and Mormeck combined.

    :good

I like the way he put Kasniqi out. Thompson didn´t get the credit for it he deserves. He makes a great fight against Wlad.

I think Vlad Vs. Thompson will be a good fight, but Vlad will eventually wear him down and knock him out once again...............

Met him in reno nevada last may on Friday night fights after he beat mo harris. One of the nicest guys you could meet. He also said he got nothing but respect for the klitchkos. He was being trained by barry hunter and I spoke to him briefly as well. Asked what was up with the peterson brothers and he said lamont was going to fight the winner of khan-judah. I said who you prefer and he said khan by far. He said you lure khan into a fight that doesn't fit his style because he often doest think and I said can't you say the same for judah that he doesn't think, and hunter said yeah but lamont is uncomfortable w/southpaws.

+1. There was a video of him with his family and it was quite refreshing. No nonsense kind of guy, very likeable.

Thanks for the article, Tony is a nice guy and he is right, an American HW champ would cause a boom in the USA again. Unfortunately it is the K2 reign, they are too good at the moment.

Thompson has always been a class act. It must be hard to sell Klitschko-Thompson in America given they're both nice guys with no intention of badmouthing each other or causing controversy

Thompson's got alot of respect for Wlad, one thing's certain, he won't make a dickhead of himself like Haye, who trash-talked the whole pre-fight build-up and did **** in the ring, Thompson will do much more to win, even if it means getting put to sleep again

Didn't Thompson nick all of that from David Haye's narrative in the buildup to the fight with WK? After all David is a world-glass sportsman that just oozes dignity and honour. :D
