Maskaev can barely stand up anymore and Rahman quit after 3 rounds with James Toney. Thompson just went 11 rounds with the #1 HW in the world, is an awkward southpaw with solid defence, a solid chin, and effective counter-punching. At this stage, he is much better than the other 2. I agree with Suge, Haye doesn't want any part of Thompson.
Thompson doesn't have a bad chin though, and I noticed you didn't list it as a negative attribute. In most the scenarios that I see playing out, Haye is faster...but it's not like he's using his speed to catch someone who doesn't want to get caught. When he tries to catch Thompson, he will be right there...and Thompson will get hit with some and he'll block some, but when he gets hit he's not going down. If Haye wants to prove himself Thompson is right, he made a good case for himself being the measuring stick.
A Haye/Thompson fight might end up being more boring than the Wlad/Thompson fight. Haye needs to fight someone who will make for an exciting fight. That means someone who isn't a lefty and someone who tends to neglect defense
Thompson would be an almost perfect initial fight for Haye, except that he doesn't have the name-recognition of some other guys, and his handlers might not want to match him up with a southpaw in his first HW fight. Thompson hits hard enough to make it credible that Haye can stand up to HW power, but doesn't hit so hard that he's likely to KO Haye in one punch. He's also slow enough to make Haye look like Neo in there. It also shows that Haye is going straight after Wlad. Finally, and possibly most importantly, Thompson would ask for a much smaller percentage of the cut than would guys like Maskev or Liakhovich or even Skelton.
Thompson is a harder fight for Haye than Maskaev or Rahman at this point, regardless of what any rankings say. All 3 are still ranked in the top 10 aren't they?
It's a no win situatuion. He'll either win a boring decision or lose a boring decision. Either way, it won't do him any good. Thompson has next to zero name recognition and is coming off a KO loss. There's no upside to this fight. There has to be a point to these fights. There would be no point of matching Haye with Thompson.
...............in other words an easy opponent? Someone like Rahman or Oleg? That won't impress knowledgeable fans at all. But, if Haye can actually KO Thompson earlier than the #1 Heavyweight Champion Wladimir did, that would start people talking...................
