I think these sparring sessions date from before their first fight. There's evidence that Thompson has slowed down since 2008, even in spite of his string of victories since then.

And it was still able to be one of the most boring heavyweight fights in memory.

Better than I thought initially. I had him pegged as another Ray Austin-type - some older, regional fighter who was basically being moved into contention because of his connection to powerful promoters.

I still wouldn't say Thompson is among the top echelon of contenders, even in this era - but he's one of the best of the rest. He will however be beaten pretty easily by Klitschko, probably knocked out earlier this time.

Gatekeeper? He's shut the gate firmly behind him on all the other contenders and is pretty much alone on the lawn.

That's inaccurate. Thompson is a very serious, long-term contender. He's still beating decent guys, as evidence by his bludgeoning of Chazz and Maurice Harris.

But it seems to me that Thompson's legs have gotten awfully stiff these past two years. He's more flatfooted now, and I don't see him bending at the knees. Those are soft signs that a guy's legs are gone.
