There was a thread about this here a couple days ago, but it somehow disappeared... Well, this just sucks... Toneys streak of bad luck never seems to end. The Toney-Thompson fight made somewhat sense and would have put the winner back into title-contention. Oquendo is not even in the top 20. Anyways, Toney should make the best out of this situation and try to make a statement by stopping Oquendo. But since Oquendo is a runner this won't be easy. Nevertheless, I have no doubts that Toney will beat Oquendo easily while I wasn't so certain about him beating Thompson. The Toney - Thompson fight should definitely be rescheduled, and not more than 3 months from now. In the end this could even be beneficial for Toney: Toney is best when he fights often - he should consider the Oquendo fight as a stay busy fight in order to shake off some ring rust and get some more rounds under his belt after the long layoff (the 3 rounds against Rahman weren't enough) before facing Thompson.
DEam, I guess this is more of a tune-up fight for Toney then. Well, the good thing for him is the fighjt didn't get canceled and he'll still be able to fight.
Are the Klits ever gonna give Toney a voluntary title shot? If that does ever come off I see Toney getting KO'd for the first time...and a one sided beat down till the end comes. He's old fat n shot and should retire and have a retirement party in Burger King or something.
You're a lucky man, enjoy the fight! I'll have to watch the fight thru a shitty internet stream in the middle of the night... Go lights out!!!
This is yet another setback for Toney and a bitter disappointement for his fans. Thompson is clearly another caliber than Oquendo who is only slightly better than Barett. Though, at least oquendo won his last 3 fights and can be viewed as an acceptable opponent for a late replacement. But, fact is a victory won't help Toney much. Now, I expect from Goossen to reschedule the fight within 2 months. The deadline of 3 months given by you is too long IMO. I expect to do this immediately after Toney's victory on Saturday. I am tired of Goossen's waiting game, he needs to make a clear statement after the fight on Saturday that Toney-Tompson is on again. There have already been 5 months since the Rahman fight. Goossen is always waiting, what is he waiting for, then.
That statement must be ironic. Oquendo is not a decent win for Toney. James wants to take on the best and not beat on bums like Haye does.
I am definitely with you on this, though I doubt that Goossen will reschedule the fight with Thompson. Providing Toney wins in a dominant fashion, my guess is that Gossen will once again try to secure an immediate title shot for Toney (or eventually an eliminator versus Haye) instead of opposing two stablemates against each other. As Toney's chances for an immediate shot or very slim, he will probably end up with no fight until mid-2009. In regard of his current age and his somewhat diminished skills, I would strongly advise Toney to rapidly switch promoters. There is no point in fighting sub par contenders like Oquendo at this time of his career. A direct link to the much more powerful Don King (I understood that King is only "co-promoting" some of Toney's fights) would do wonders for him. If King successfully brought Golota back in the picture, imagine what he could do for Toney...
bad fight for toney imo, toney is best against come forward sluggers, easier to counter, oquendo ran from byrd so i imagine hell jab and run from toney
Worried this'll be a major stinker, Toney hanging on the ropes trying to lure Oquendo in, Oquendo keeping so far away he'll be practically on the ring steps, flicking his jab. His loss to Holyfield was questionable, but Fres didn't help his cause with his horribly negative approach.
