I feel this would be a very close boxing match... don't think that either one of them would be able to stop the other.. I'm going with the Truth in a very narrow 7-5 decision. This one is for Eye of Timeus… love your 80's match ups and don't think I have seen this one before

Two very smooth boxers. Both who’s achilles’ heels are big punchers and getting caught. They wouldn’t have to worry about that facing each other. Williams is the slightly bigger puncher and has a longer jab but Tubbs is quicker and has better upper body movement. Man this is a tough one. I’m actually going to take Carl Williams, at his best he’d dictate the pace with that long jab and he’s got enough sock in his right cross to keep Tony honest. Tony won’t do enough and will be On the receiving end of some good exchanges that Williams gets the better of. Williams will end up winning by a few rounds and taking a majority decision let’s say. Williams is one of the few boxers from around Tony’s era that I would favor to beat him in a “boxing match” many guys could possibly catch him and knock him out like Tyson did but he was pretty slick, but so is Williams. Carl’s long jab and his better conditioning will be the biggest factor.

I guess I'd expect Williams to jab his way to a points win, but Tubbs at his best might have been slick and deceptively fast enough to overcome the reach disadvantage. Very interesting matchup.

At his best I wouldnt say there were "many guys" from Tubbs era that could knock him out. He easily outboxed Bonecrusher and went 15 with Page in wining and 15 with Witherspoon in losing.

The best versions of Tubbs and Williams actually occurred only one month apart in April and May 1985 respectively. The 229 lb Tubbs won a convincing decision over Page to annex the WBA title while the Truth surprised everyone in losing a debatable decision to an aging Larry Holmes.

This is a competitive matchup which would be a chess match. Williams would have height and reach advantages. They both have great jabs. Williams hits a bit harder. Tony had better reflexes, faster handspeed, more flluid movement, better defense and better ring generalship. Prime Tubbs was similar to Jimmy Young in that he knew how to shut down an opponents offense. He was a very cerebral fighter. Tubbs would use angles and make Williams come to him.
He could also dart in and out when necessary and was a good body puncher. Williams didnt have much offense other than the jab. Tubbs would find a way to take that weapon away. It wouldnt be exciting. But Tubbs should be able to win a decision something like 10-5 or 9-6.

I'm with Williams, but Tubbs is certainly capable of defeating Williams. Close.

Truth had the reach, better left jab and more power in the right. Tubbs had faster hands. Both could the distance. Neither had great chins. Williams weakness was the left hook. I’m leaning towards Carl by a close decision

Tubbs had better boxing ability, Williams had the better jab and power. If Tubbs comes into the ring in shape, he wins a close UD. If Tony doesn't, as I expect, Carl wins by UD, with a knockdown sealing the deal late.

This could easily go either way. Afterall, these are 80s heavyweights we're talking about here. I tend to favor Tubbs for consistency, but stylistically and physically, Williams does hold the advantages.
