Did anyone see the fight between these two heavies in 1989...I was curious about the fight and wondering was it competitive?
Laugh all you like, but Orlin Norris was slick and winning in 1989 thru 1992.... He was good at 200+ pounds, but small and lacking power... By 1999, against a shot Tyson, both were pathetic.... MR.BILL
I thought the Tyson fight started off pretty well. Tyson was doing some good things in that fight and taking his time. Norris was hit unfairly at the bell, but I think he pulled a ***** move because of Mike Marley telling him to not continue to get a rematch.
I saw Orlin Norris fight a couple of times back around 1989. I watched him handedly outbox an aged Greg Page and a few months later, a journeyman named Dee Colier. He was both awekward and fast, possesing a fair amount of skill. In my opinion, he really didn't have the physical tools to go very far at the heavyweight ranks, which eventually led to his dropping down to cruiser, but he certainly sported a respectable heavyweight career, winning a number of fights there and briefly holding the NABF title.. He is also the brother of Terry Norris.
to this fight yeah it was on the tube not long ago. good match but tubbs bulldozed over him in some rounds. just pushed through and backed him up for a flurry then back to his jabbing. norris was doing just as well as him. probably better than terry to be honest. terry was more spiteful and quicker in a p4p sense but orlin was the better technician no doubt about it. the ring ranked him 5th in the all time cruiserweight rankings. this includes qawi,holyfield,deleon. yes a good fighter and fought at heavyweight for the money but wasn't effective. would of fought at 185 if he was required to. when he was at heavy he was always a bit too bulky. just 2 inches and 10 pounds less than a effective heavyweight for his style he is the example of why there is the cruiserweight division.
i know i'm hijacking your thread, but i think alfred cole was one of the better cruisers of the era same with arthur williams.
I have never seen the Tubbs-Norris fight. I know that initially Tubbs won a majority decision, one judge called it even. Tubbs tested positive for coke and the decision was changed to a NC. At the time, Norris was NABF champ and was ranked in the top 10. Reports in the mags at the time were that Tubbs outboxed Norris in "an energetic performance." Unfortuanetly for Tubbs, some of that energy appeared to have come from illicit substances. I liked Tubb's ability. Despite the drug problems, he could really fight. Watch his 1991 fight against Riddick Bowe. Bowe won a close decision, but couldn't really land anything hurtfull on the cagey Tubbs.
And arguably Tubbs should've had the draw, too. Also thought Norris was unfortunate in losing to Tucker in '91. In a close fight he looked the sharper by the end.
