That clearly isn't the end to the story, as me and many other fans have scored it for Tubbs. The fact that a fight like this is even close or debatable is evidence enough that it's no open and shut case. But I never talked about potential... I put down men he fought and mostly beat, the only "potential" part of what I was saying lied with Bowe, and their fight, which is a contentious topic- And once again, not some fantasy. You talked more about potential when replying to Seamus about Walcott. The 80's heavyweight scene gets criticized as some "hot potato" era of no names simply because belts got passed around, but these men were good fighters. Title shots were passed around, and whoever was the better man won, it's that simple. Tubbs' claim to the WBA title is just as legitimate as Walcott's claim to the lineage, if not MORESO. Remember that Joe got multiple shots at the title and needed to face Charles three times to get a win, lost to Layne in a title eliminator and STILL got a shot in his very next fight. And I showed you what we got, which is still a heck of a lot more than Walcott managed to do. Joe holds better singular wins against Charles but that's about it- Tubbs would never lose to Rex Layne while in shape.
That's fine. Then, we need to separate the "ideal" peak version of Tubbs from the Tubbs we really got during his boxing career. That is the reason I haven't formed yet a firm opinion on who would win between Tubbs and Walcott. I agree a drug free, in shape, focused Tubbs would be a danger for anybody and has a very good chance of beating Walcott. A different issue ts that the "ideal" version of Tubbs frequently was nowehere to be found during his career, so he esentially was an underachiever, regardless his considerable boxing skills.
Interesting matchup. If they fought 10 times, I can see each man winning a few. Tubbs did have really fast hands for a big man. But, an edge overall to Walcott, who would also have the better odds of winning by stoppage.
I want to add that Jersey Joe Walcott got beat every third time he stepped through the ropes. Duck-Duck-LOSE!
Tubbs by decision. Bigger and also quicker. His jab could keep Walcott at bay. This content is protected
Always loved the Tony Tubbs jogging stories----he'd drive his Rolls Royce and park it & get out and jog. And was it Witherspoon or who that said---yeah Tony tnt Tubbs. The tnt stood for tacos n tamales. One of his contemporaries that didn't care for him said it.
