This is hard to gauge because Tubbs was talented but inconsistent and Cooney was just an enigma for the most part whose career had stops and starts and long gaps (years) of inactivity. At his best I believe that Cooney could catch up to Tubbs and knock him out. Cooney was chinny but Tubbs was not known to be a big banger. However, i go back to cooney being an enigma. Cooney was putrid against Spinks and Tubbs would undoubtably have beaten Cooney in that fight. With each man at his best I would say Cooney by kayo in about 6 rounds.
I think its possible that Tubbs could have taken it, but as Mr. Bill already mentioned, he'd have to box very carefully and if possible, show up in half way decent condition. Tubbs did not exactly have the best set of whiskers and nor was he quite as good of a technician as Holmes was.. If Tubbs did not sport the best performance of his career, Cooney may have dispatched him..
I think in this one Tony Tubbs will definitely have his moments when he is totally outboxing Cooney but somewhere down the line Cooney will land that lethal left hook to Tubbs' soft midsection and stop him much like he did vs. Ron Lyle. If it isnt a one punch shot that does it, look for an accumulation of left hooks to the body that will slow Tubbs down so that Cooney gets him outta there in the mid to late rounds.
Tony Tubbs and Buster Douglas were a lot alike in many ways......... Both had good skills to box, however, both were often lazy *******'s in the gym............ Also, neither owned a solid beard..... Tubbs and Douglas could be hurt and stopped if tagged cleanly......... As long as Tubbs stays focused and boxes Cooney from the outside, Tubbs schools the mechanical but powerful Cooney over 10 rds........ MR.BILL
I think Tony has the ability to just about shut out Gerry, but he has to be at his absolute best. The guy decisioned BoneCrusher without any major problems, so I'm giving him a 10, 12, or 15 round decision, with Gerry having a small puncher's chance.
True, My memory keeps going back to when an aging Tubbs boxed very well against a somewhat green, but nearly primed Riddick Bowe, and managed to fight him to a near standstill. As I mentioned, Bowe was still a work in progress, but frankly I think that he was probably just as formidable by 1991 and at 23-0 as Cooney ever was. Tony was about 5-6 years past his best as well.. Again, I agree that Tubbs would have to be in good physical and mental shape in order to keep up a swift pace for 10 or 12 rounds and stay out of harm's way... If he can do this, he may take a decision... If he shows up looking like he did against Tim Witherspoon and Mike Tyson, he runs the risk of getting tagged too often... Cooney's left uppercuts to Tubb's flabby mid section might creative havock, slowing him down and resulting in a stoppage...
