Now, we're going to imagine a world without cocaine and donuts. With that caveat, how would the best version of Tubbs, theoretically one that could be sustained without certain distractions, have fared against the following? We have a 6-3, 230 pound, 80 inch reach, insanely fast of hand and foot skill master going against this murderers row. Preem Max Baer Uzcudun Schmeling Sharkey Pastor Braddock Farr Galento Thoughts?
This would be the opposite of what Ron Stander's wife said about Stander fighting Frazier. Instead of entering a VW in the Indianapolis 500, this would be like taking an Indianapolis car to a VW race. From what I've seen on video, Sharkey is the best of that group, but I can't see him being a problem for the best Tubbs. IMO Tubbs beats all of them, no problems.
So, we can conclude that a properly prepared Tubbs would have been greater than Louis were he fortunate enough, career-wise, to turn pro in 1934. Thanks for all the good work done here.
To point out the elephant in the room, he only managed to put together any sort of form for a few years.
How many dives did Tubbs take part in anyway? I've seen footage of footballer Jimmy Ellis knocking him out with the first punch of the first round, and it didn't look fishy to me... just looked like he got caught unprepared, which you obviously always need to be in the sport of boxing. Haven't more then one fighter come out over the years and said they were paid to lose/be stopped against Brian Nielson his backyard?
Tubbs fast hands and boxing skill would have been noticed in every era. But his conditioning was usually poor and his wins over quality opposition are few. I suspect there are quite a few Louis opponents who he could have beaten on some of the rare nights he was in top form. But there are several who I’d favor over him. Joe Walcott being one of the main ones . Some of the bigger punchers like Buddy Baer, Max Baer, Abe Simon and primo Carnera would be dangerous propositions.
You’re missing a component here in this hypothetical existence Tubbs wouldn’t have access to his sole motivations for fighting.
I shiver thinking about the destruction a modern Tubbs would lay on the Baer boys, Simon or Carnera. Levels, people. Those old keystone cop brawlers just weren't the same as the era that brought us Tubbs, Tucker, Page, Dokes... Levels.
To be fair Jameson was one of the best sparring partners of his day and Tubbs was more interested in smoking crack then being a committed boxer...
Fixed... I shiver thinking about the destruction a modern Tubbs would lay on the Baer boys, Simon or Carnera. Levels, people. Those old keystone cop brawlers just weren't the same as the era that brought us Tubbs, Tucker, Page, Dokes, Mike Jameson... Levels.
To be fair then, some of that also has to be factored when sizing him up across eras. He wasn’t always in shape or committed and even when he was he still didn’t always look impressive
