Ahh, the "prime" of Tony Tubbs. In which round and in which fight did the duration of his "prime" last?
Tubbs has the ability to outbox Wilder his boxing skills are far superior with very good movement and handspeed. But Tubbs was a bit on the chinny side and I'm not sure Tubbs could avoid Wilder for all 12 rounds without getting clocked. But seeing how Tubbs did avoid Bowe's bombs for 10 rounds it's certainly not out of the question Tubbs could win by decision.
Deontay Wilder didn't lose a decision until he was 38 years old. Tony Tubbs got outboxed and lost in 1986 (when he was 28), got KOed in 2 in 1988 (when he was 30), was disqualified in 1989 (when he was 31), was decisioned in 1991 (when he was 33), was KOed in 1 in 1992 (when he was 34), was KOed in 1 in 1993 (when he was 35), was outboxed in 1994 (when he was 36), was outboxed in 1995, and also took a dive in 1995 (when he was 37), before he basically retired for the next seven years. There weren't many years when Tubbs didn't lose to someone, whether they were bad or good. And even when he was winning decisions, journeymen like Mike Evans and Wimpy Halstead won three or four of the 10 rounds against him. You get KO'd in one round by Lionel Butler when you should still be in your prime, you're not beating Wilder. People are ridiculous.
Tubbs had bad habits he was a drug addict and his weight often ballooned up which is why he didn't have a long prime. Regardless that is irrelevant because when you're matching up 2 fighters in a mythical match up you're pitting the best versions of both fighters. And to be fair the fighters Tubbs lost to in the 80s were Witherspoon, Tyson, two fighters who would be favoured over Wilder.
Tubbs was the better boxer. But I don’t know if his chin can withstand the right hand of Deontay Wilder: he might avoid some of those bombs for a while. But will he make it through a full fight unharmed and ahead ? I don’t know.
If it's the best version of Tubbs vs. the best version of Wilder, then what do you think was the BEST version of Tubbs and the BEST version of Wilder? Which fights? Be specific. Because nobody outboxed Wilder and won a decision until he was an old man. But Tubbs got decisioned and knocked out well before that by any number of people who weren't exactly great at either. Because Tubbs beating Wilder is pure fantasy.
Tubbs is winning until he isn’t. It’s funny how people are rated highly, then their stock drops to such a large degree simply because they lost a world class fighter, then had some losses when he was washed up, again to solid fighters.
That 15-round slog against Page was Tubbs at his best? What was Wilder at his best, in your opinion, and how does that Tubbs beat that version of Wilder?
