Am I the only guy who thinks Tony Tubbs when on top of his game and in decent shape had the skills to compete with just about anyone?

Tubbs early on in his career seemed to have much more desire then later on. He wasn't a devastating puncher but had very fast hands and great skills it led him to winning the WBA title from a good fighter in Greg Page. After this he seemed to go down hill slowly, he came in much heavier looking a lot slower and still fought a competitive 15 round fight with Tim Witherspoon a good fighter, losing his belt. After that he continued to go down hill, I don't know how motivated or what his preparation for Tyson was like or whether he had began to abuse drugs yet but he came in quite heavy and was taken out by a prime Tyson in the 2nd round after boxing a good 1st round. His career from this point was up and down. He had a drug problems throughout the 1990's and always came in looking out of shape but was still able to trouble and beat some top fighters. I feel if Tubbs stayed motivated with his abilities and was able to stay in decent shape and steer clear of drugs he could've had a much more successful career. Story of a lot of early 80's fighters though a number of them seemed to lose there desire once they captured the title.

You are not the only one. He had good size, great handspeed and excellent boxing ability, including particularly nimble footwork.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Yea, Tubbs was good. had great allaround skills, defense, fast hands, combinations, and knew what to do in the ring. I hate when these guys that are smaller, not big punchers, but smart and crafty guys you know can beat anyone just don't put it together for some reason, maybe drugs, drink, I don't know what.

I still think he could've gotten the W against Bowe. Very talented fighter. Underachiever for sure.

Tubbs was 6-3 with an 80 inch reach... not exactly "smaller"

Not smaller at all. Problem started with the name Tubbs. He seemed obligated to live up to it. Definitely talented though.

His size and handspeed troubled Tyson a lot in their first round.

Tubbs and Greg Page could have swapped identities and nobody would have noticed.

That is nearly as bad The Truth's 'I was outjabbing him' comment.

Under the right circumstances and while being in ideal shape, he could have won his fights against Bowe and Witherspoon.
