In my opinion, never got his career really rolling. He let the Tyson loss derail him and send him into inactivity. When he came back he put together a streak, but not against anyone very impressive and was always dull to watch. In the days of singular champions, we'd call him a perennial contender...but never a champ.
Tyson won his fights due to his elbows. The occasional other punches were either the finishing touches, or thrown when the situation screamed for him to use them, but the elbows were his bread and butter. Without them he would not have been nearly as impressive, got hit more and had hand problems and probably other injuries too. Tyson's style relied on elbows.
in the absence of Tyson, would have been the next lineal champion after Spinks for several years. accurate, fast, great footwork, great defence, and could hit hard. Would kill both Klitschkos for sure.
