One article on his life some time later stated going to the ropes and not fighting in that round was his way of getting his father back.

Buster had some real catch 22 going on.

Have a read of this article Goo, it's absolutely brilliant.

To me, this is a surprisingly large ratio of votes in favor of Douglas.
I think so because I think Tyson (Tucker fight) would beat Tokyo Tyson.

The Tyson from this fight would easily beat Tokyo Tyson, good thing that's not who we're comparing. Lol

Yes. That's the point of the story.
Tucker fought a better version of Tyson than Douglas.
    And Tucker beat Douglas.
That's why the 11:4 vote in favor of Douglas surprises me.

I had Douglas winning against Tucker before he gassed out, that loss was a blessing in disguise for him to not face Tyson in 87 to later win.

I think Tucker would have still prevailed, maybe by points.
I don't think that Buster quitted, he was simply overwhelmed by the better fighter that night.
Douglas was clearly not far ahead as they were evenly matched, but I think Tucker bodyshots counters throughout the fight and more conservative approach (he seemed really nervous during the early part of the fight) made the difference at the end.

I see an interview with Douglas recently he said after the Tucker fight he got rid of his dad who was big part of his team at that point. Apparently there was an atmosphere with his dad and the trainers in regards to alot of arguments and heated exchanges so Douglas felt it was best after the Tucker fight that his dad kept his distance.

It did seem to work out as Douglas went on to have the best period of his career after the Tucker loss.

I agree. I have met both Buster and Billy Douglas several times. Buster was a gentle giant, his dad was hard as nails. They really could not have been more opposite (other than both being skilled boxers). Buster was much closer with his mother.
