No ,this was not just a case of bad officiating. Weeks has been around for decades. It was the most blatantly criminal interference in a match to change the outcome I've ever seen and I've been watching the sport since the 60's.
the boxing establishment needs a type of pseudo lobby to be able to apply official unified public pressure to try and force policy changes within these organizations to address situations like this. There needs to be a panel that reviews situations like this the immediate week after, and comes to prompt decisions to overturn these results to a NC and order immediate rematches. The Boxing establishment needs to get unified and put forth some effort to make this happen. 10 prominent fighters and trainers beating down the doors of wherever they need to, to make this happen, and to hold this scumbag accountable as well. I'm so tired of the Boxing worlds impotent outrage. The establishment needs a unified body to come against these sort of things harder.
I'm hearing you, believe me - and while I wouldn't rule out your take as a possibility, I do tend towards looking for reasons why something like that might have happened before running with a theory of corruption/criminality. But, as has been alluded to by others, the bigger issue is the lack of accountability or even a mechanism through which abject conduct like this can be properly addressed. So we are left with making speculative accusations. This case does look highly suspicious and should be investigated. But the hope of this happening thoroughly and honestly is a faint one.
I agree Ward was winning but the stoppage was horrendous if anything Weeks robbed Ward of a grand stand finish. I thought he was deducting point from Ward for the low blows.
No reason to "Investigate him". The evidence was in plain view. That's like "investigating" my kid for stealing cookies out of the pantry while he's got the bag in hand and chocolate smeared on his hands and face. Just assign the consequences.
I'm no fan of Malignaggi but he nails it here. https://youtube.com/shorts/pyfDTgUGeFc?feature=share I just wish these guys like him that see the BS and have platforms, would really step forward and apply public pressure on showtime or the sanctioning body to force a rematch.
It's credible how a referee can stop a fight when NONE of the punches landed. The knockdown of Romero in the 3rd round was a terrible missed call, but the stoppage is probably the worst in the history of boxing.
Absolutely terrible refereeing and stoppage. What should happen is a the result declared void, a rematch ordered and the ref suspended and the whole thing investigated - none of which will happen. Barrosa was winning and slipped almost all of that. Sad to say with his age time is not on his side. That quite possibly severely hindered his career and financial security. Happens all the time a preferred fighter gets favoured at every opportunity. It's a kind of 'corruption' rife throughout and at the core of the sport. It's criminal.
If he got paid then it's a legit stoppage. You guys don't seriously expect the man to work for free? Would any of you suckers work for free?
Holy molly! I've just watched the fight. Impossible not to agree with the OP. It's as close to pure corruption as it can be.
