Well, "Zale" is short for the Polish surname "Zaleski", pronounced "ay-rin" and meaning "iron' and "Steele" comes from the Old English for "Steel" and Steel is better than iron. So, if surnames are meant to mean anything, Steele wins.
McAvoy beats them both. another fight that should have happened. the American middles didn't want to know at the time, mid late 30s. as to Steele, Zale, I'd go 50/50, they could both win & lose to each other, my gut says Steele the better boxer in a series, but Zale is just as good in the fight department!
Steele was very clever and he had outstanding footwork, which is unusually for such a hard, proficient right hand bomber. I think Zale's death defying courage would make for plenty of chilling moments in the bout, but Steele's class would see him to a win by a margin of three or four rounds.
Prime Steele is something to behold. I wish there were more footage of him. Smooth, hair trigger punching and hit like a ton of bricks.
