he, who can really say? Georgie Abrams did well against a prime Charley Burley. Youngster Billy Soose fought a competitive decision against a prime Burley. Jimmy Leto, little known today beat some " murderers row " members...LaMotta did fight tough black contenders starting out, no doubt
but I feel that H2H a prime Zale, or Freddie Steele, a Fred Apostoli, has a better than even chance of beating LaMotta were they to have fought in their 160 pound primes...a Georgie Abrams drew with the prime Charley Burley, lost a CLOSE DISPUTED decision to Ray Robinson, and in turn was licked by Tony Zale before WW2...
All the fighters mentioned above would be middleweight champions today, no doubt...

Whatever LaMotta says, it seems that they didn't all duck the black contenders at all. And nor were they always beaten when they fought them.

Ken Overlin fought Ezzard Charles, Lloyd Marshall, Nate Bolden.

Georgie Abrams fought Charley Burley, Cocoa Kid and Sugar Ray Robinson.

Teddy Yarosz fought Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall, Jimmy Reeves, Turkey Thompson, Nate Bolden, Al Gainer.

Billy Soose fought Charley Burley, Jimmy Bivins, Jimmy Reeves.

Ossie Harris (who burt mentioned) fought Charley Burley, Nate Bolden, Sugar Ray Robinson and Tommy Bell.

Tony Zale fought Nate Bolden four times on his way up.

    etc.

i claimed that he may b on d same level or greater , not that he certainly is so i won't argue much about it , but both men had good stoppages and humiliating stoppage losses , zale did have slighlty more of d latter i believe , but I read that Gomez' win over Zarate was in PR due 2 hitting him while down . I don't remember it from what i've seen , but maybe i should rewatch it or simply somehow didn't get 2 that part .
Both also had a few good decision wins i believe , i think 1 of those guys Zale outpointed , had n injury and it is possible that it happened prior 2 Zale's win/s over him which further reduces Zale's resume . I m quite sure that Zale is overrated and overhyped but d same applies t least as 4 most of them guys in that list Bert Sugar compared 2 him .

Gomez did hit Zarate while he was down, more than once if i remember right but after the 1st KD it was clear Gomez was the superior fighter and would've dismantled Zarate IMO.

i now rewatched it again , my 2 youtube sources 4 this fight r both of crap quality but i did find Gomez hitting Zarate while he was down 1 time . If there was another , it must appear in d damaged part of d video .
It is possible that Gomez was on his way 2 stopping Zarate anyway , but Joe Luis Ramirez was beaten even worse by Rosario until he stopped Rosario , so until it happens legally it isn't happening . Another example is Golota vs Grant , it's like saying that if Golotta would have hit a downed Grant and then stopped him , he would've been d victor anyway but it known that it didn't happen and who won in d end .
Gomez deliberately hit Zarate after he went down and deserved 2 get DQd 4 it . Instead of immediately DQing Gomez , d referee immediately announced him as d winner by way of TKO . This ending counts only as a DQ win 4 Zarate . It is also possible that Gomez is still greater than Zale despite it , and he surely didn't duck as much as legit threats as Zale did , but then he also didn't have as many of them if at all . And then it may be because of him being better , all of this just show u that it may b close .

Who did Tony Zale duck ?
only Lloyd Marshall , Charley Burley , no rematch with Georgie Abrahams and i m quite certain that these names r not even half of d list .
What about Archie Wright , Billy Conn , Billy Soose , Eddie Booker , Bert Lytell and i bet some more ? can u give d excuses 4 him not fighting all of them ?

He fought Billy Conn, and Billy Soose too.
Most of those others were contenders while the war was on, and Zale was inactive.

From what I've seen of Zale (basically highlights of the Graziano fights) he looked impressive but I dont know enough about him to evaluate how good he really was. I started a thread recently asking how he'd do against a middleweight James Toney but nobody really replied.

Again, this was Jake's quote ... there can be little doubt there was a terrific class of black fighter in that era and weight class that was highly avoided for the most part ... that can be said for almost every pre 1960's era ...

I agaree Burt. When I was growing up in the 30s and mainly the 40s, Zale was considered a terrific fighter. And back then, boxing and baseball were the 2 top sports, always in the paper. I would have taken him over LaMotta. But LaMotta was soooo tough. He wouldn't lose to anyone I don't think in a three fight deal everytime. And if I'm not mistaken, didn'y Abrams draw with Robinson. SRR avoided thes fighters also. And the best middle of them all in the 40s (who I think would have stopped Jake) was the best fighter I ever saw live (and maybe anywhere)-middleweight Ezzard Charles. I say again; a middleweight Charles beats a prime Robinson.
