We've all questioned at different times why/how the world champion in a weight class is not compelled or mandated to fight the No 1 contender in that weight class. Answer: Too many governing bodies (WBC, WBA...) and sanctioning fees.

And it doesn't matter who the current champions are, all eventually duck their most eligible foe!! Yeah I know - give champions a chance to secure their futures.

Today an evenly matched championship fight is billed as a "superfight," and then some wonder why boxing's popularity is diminishing.

There are certainly too many world champs/title holders out there.

In terms of "ducking", or "avoiding", it's not just this era.

That's always been part of the sport. Nowadays with the internet and all, interviews and everything are more well known.

And according to message board logic, not fighting someone who is "calling you out" means you ducked them.

It's one of the main problems for boxing IMO. It makes it almost impossible for interested casual fans to get into the sport. It's just ridiculous. Way too many sanctioning bodies. Boxing could learn a thing or two about this stuff from the UFC.

yes the problem with boxing today is that it is too hard for the average fan to follow. In the UFC there is one champion per division and about four or five legit contenders for the title. Thus whenever there is a championship fight everyone watching knows whose fighting and whether or not its going to be a good fight. With Boxing there are so many divisions and so many governing bodies each ranking about fifteen fighters that the sport is too hard to follow. Its just too hard for the average sports fan to follow.

And you look at even the best UFC fighters and they all have a few losses. Why? Because they are always fighting the best.

Boxing is hopeless the way it's set up. Too many people out to get what they can. No umbrella body to look out for the good of the sport.
