I like the idea HBO had years ago (whicj never really took off) of calling the wbc, wbo, ibf, and wba champions as titlists or belt holders, and recognizing that there was a world champion in that division who transcended that and was above them. So guys could still go after titles to their hearts content but would not be recognized as the legit world champion of that division. I agree there are too many weight classes, but this is secondary to the plethora of champions (or "belt holders") per weight class. How do you get to this point is the real probelm. Another issue is for the most part boxing isnt taken as seriously (at least in the US) as the other major sports. ESPN commentators, fans, and players would be losing their minds if an NBA or NFL season ended and instead of the playoffs and eventual championship game/series there were 4-6 teams laying claim to be world champions and none of them wanted to play each other. In boxing, this is just the way it is because there is no pushback.
