I started boxing when i was 8 and had my last am fight when i was 19, still go once or twice a week to train and do a bit of sparring but even at 27 i cannot be arsed fighting anymore, but i reckon if i did i would hold my own due to skills learnt in my youth. A lad in work 29 who's never been near a boxing gym but is a big fan of the sport wants to get into it and have a few amatuer fights in his words 'before he gets too old'. Do you reckon that is too late on to pick up enough skills to cope without getting a hammering?
No it's not too old. Too old to make a career out of it yes, but not for the am's. I think the age limit for the am's is 34 so he's got some time. It's better than looking back when he's too old thinking 'damn I wish I had done it a few years ago', instead of living with regrets. One life man.
If I were him I'd probably just go boxing and spar. For me it would be too late at 29. Right now even at 23 I think it's late. But I have been going for about 6 months and at least its off my chest.
I don't think you can ever get TOO OLD to start (apart from 40+ :lol). Just get him to learn a few basics, get his some gear and put him in with another real **** guy. He'll love the experience and will probably try double as hard next time.
nah not at all. there's a few fighters who started at a late age, Nate Campbell being one. Fact is if he isn't very good he shouldn't be given get carded but if he can take a shot and give it out and do basics to an ok level then he be good to go. funny thing is i'm contemplating taking an offer from a guy and i'm 21 and i wonder the same thing yet i say different to other people in same predicament. It's better now rather then later...wish i'd follow my advice...think i will :bbb
Mandanda DO IT! 21? You've got plenty of time ffs. At least get down a boxing gym, even if it's just to get fitter. 21 haha I see alot of guys older than that joining my **** hole everyday. As you say follow your own advice, or when your too old and its too late you might regret not trying and thinking '**** why didnt I just go for it?'
:yep cheers mate. i boxed for years until i was 14. i fell out of love for sport (fights falling through etc) and i've tried football and i love it but there's nothing better then grinding in the gym and sparring and perfecting your skills. i was working tonight and i thought i don't wanna be here i wanna be in gym. cheers pal i think i'm gonna take up the offer :happy
Too old nothing! I didnt start boxing till 27, was thai boxing for a couple of years before that. I will stay in the amatuers untill I am 35, and turn pro if I am still up for it!
Did you have any fights? I think it makes you regret it more once you've boxed then stop. I did when I was about 13, didn't have any fights though, I stopped after a while. Then went back when I was 15 turning 16. I was on and off for ages and while totally in love with the sport just lacked the enthusiasm to go and train. I'm still there boxing now waiting for this season too start, but now somethings coming up and I don't think I'll be able to sign up for at least a while. :-( My coach is pissed. :yep
I had 2 kickboxing fights. I boxed over 200 rounds of sparring and competitive with other clubs and i went to 3 shows and had 3 fights canceled and also had 4 other fights canceled in week leading to fight. I went to fight an Irish kid out of Epsom & Ewell. They pulled him out saying i was to big for weight (Bantamweight). I ended up getting disheartened and my final straw was in Dagenham when me and a few other lads were going towards the scales to weigh in the guy said no more fights i want to get home some time tonight (18 bouts on the show) and one lad who been in gym 6 months fought and i didn't he was stopped in 2 and ref told our trainer that was a disgrace that the lad had been carded to box he was clearly not ready. clubs shut down and gone now. I trained at Maloney's gym in Deptford and one of trainers there (Elvis M) said i had good power and that was a few years back. I was decent fighter (styles better for pro's).
Mandanda, get to it. I'm 22 and wish I had the dedication, alas, I only have it in spurts, which defeats the object really...
Cheers mate i know i'm not old..i think it's me being bit worried if i can take shots like i did as a kid and fight how i used to...i won't ever know till i get back to it. i been doing road runs recently and shadow box a lot recently. (copying the greats off youtube ). Cheers Boys you advice is much appreciated :good
The sharpness will return. I'm looking at just building up my strength and core at the mo', correct my balance and then to get back into it, admittedly having only sparred before. My style is most definitely not suited to the amateur game
Ain't that the truth! :deal You tried mate, so many people talk but not many end up actually backing it up in this sport, can't blame anyone as most of us know on ESB boxing's not like other sports. Sounds like alot of bad luck on your part. I've only just turned 18 which now means I fight men right? :| I'm not too sure right now, I'll have to check. Anyway mate it sounds like 'there's something left in the basement' so you need to go and get it out of you, can't be living with regrets now, same goes with the thread starter and your mate.
. yeah take it step by step that's what i'm gonna do. i think i do some sprints tomorrow. I'm carrying a bit of fat but i can lose that very quickly. I been doing minor weights and chin ups. Since i've joined this site i really become aware of what i used to do wrong and things i can do better. Just need to find a boxing gym and get back into swing of things.
