The gym I used to go in Liverpool had a guy who trained there called Dave Maj who was 27, had no amateur experience but wanted to turn pro. He ended up having 17 pro fights (was 5-9-3).

Mate that's brilliant. How long have you been training?

I'm 36 and trying to pluck up the courage to walk into a gym. I've never done any boxing before, but I really want to learn a bit. I love the sport and really want to give it a go.

It's a bit intimidating though so I keep bottling it...

Is it? Ive found most people in a boxing gym are polite and accomodating if you talk to them.

There are plenty of decent pros who started late, Sergio Martinez was about 27 when he had his first pro fight (I think - happy to be corrected) so I think somebody just aiming for a few fights in the ams should be fine even in their 30's.

I turn 25 in 2 months, never boxed before in my life but I'm going to give it a go because, even though I'm definitely going to be **** at it, I know I'll regret it one day if I don't.

Reading this thread was what convinced me to give it a go. I'm 29, out of shape and never set foot in a boxing gym in my life. I finally got the balls last Thursday to walk into a gym and ask about it. I knew the trainer and one of my high school classmates that is a pro was their training. He told me to show up Monday and he would work with me. I'm pretty excited and can't wait, its just hard for me to slow down my weekend drinking. I've been jogging and jumping rope for two weeks so I hope that helps a little bit. Can't wait, reading the training threads give me motivation.

Roberto, a year ago I could have wrote your post myself.

I was always interested, but the first gym I visited turned me off because it was on a university campus and the aside from the coaches, I was 10 yrs older and 100lbs heavier than everyone there. Nobody made me feel welcome, and it was very much not what I expected after speaking to the coach on the phone prior.

This time around I called the local gym and arranged some private lessons with the owner. I started learning the basics and got comfortable with the gym and the people there and its been great.

So far, I've been at it since late Feb 2010 and today was my first sparring session. My goal is to have at least one Am fight in the Masters Division, and assuming I'm ready, I'd like to do that within the next year.

You can check out my training log here (guilty of not updating for a while): http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215001

As for the sparring, I'm going to post a new discussion about it, so check that out if you want.

Good luck man, and don't be intimidated. Go in there, stick with it and give it hell.

    :bbb

I had my first fight a few weeks before turning 33. If he wants to fight he should go for it.
